High temperatures will be kept to the 20s and 30s, but windy conditions will make it feel even colder. The cold air blowing over the comparatively warm waters of the Great Lakes will result in a significant lake-effect snow event, with several feet of snow falling downwind of the lakes. High pressure will keep dry weather in place from the Southeast to the West Coast. The Pacific coast will be the only region to have above- normal temperatures. But in recent weeks as allegations of other sexual assaults have taken hold in published reports and on social media, his rock-solid persona seems in danger of permanent erosion. "It's not like, if you have goodwill, you can borrow against that," says Eric B. Dezenhall, a Washington- based crisis management consultant. "And if your goal is to get everybody to un-remember what they just heard — well, that's just not doable." Cosby, 77, has never been charged with a crime and so far has steadfastly refused to address the uproar. He's granted few in-person in- terviews to media. And an attempt to put out the fire with a positive social media buzz backfired, generating criticism rather than praise. There is no sign that his silent treatment — outside of a statement from his at- torney Sunday characteriz- ing the accusations as "dis- credited" — will placate the accusers or outlast their de- mands that he answer to their claims. His staunchest fans have dismissed the assault accu- sations that have dogged him for years while they overlooked his admissions of marital infidelity. For them, his image remains snugly aligned with that of Cliff Huxtable, the gentle, all-knowing husband and father he played on "The Cosby Show" as a cham- pion of family values who, 20 years earlier, broke TV's color barrier with his 1960s series "I Spy." But that image could hurt now more than help, even placing his legacy at risk. "We love the concept of hypocrisy, whether it's true or not," says Dezenhall, who recently published the book "Glass Jaw — A Manifesto for Defending Fragile Rep- utations in an Age of In- stant Scandal." "We love learning that somebody in reality may be the opposite of what they seem. ... The squeakier-clean your repu- tation, the more the public embraces these stories." For older Cosby fans, Cosby undisputedly is "a venerated figure who stands for education and achieve- ment and common sense," says NPR television critic Eric Deggans, who has re- ported on the accusations. "But there's an entire gener- ation for whom his projects are distant memories with distant impact. And in later years, he has gone around demanding that poor black people pull themselves up by their bootstraps, get their house in order." Cosby's blunt call for per- sonal responsibility has of- ten stigmatized him in young eyes not as Ameri- ca's dad but as America's cranky granddad "tak- ing aim at youth culture," Deggans says. The Associated Press FARMINGTON, UTAH A judge on Monday sentenced a Utah mother to serve at least 20 years in prison for her role in the killing of her 4-year-old son, who was malnourished, beaten and disfigured before he was buried in the mountains. Stephanie Sloop, 31, sobbed as she apologized in court and said her self- ish behavior led to Ethan Stacy's 2010 death. She said she had abused prescription medications "to the point I was unable to make sound choices and decisions, thus causing me to be reckless and indiffer- ent with my Ethan's life." "I am entirely respon- sible, because I was his mommy," Sloop said, ac- cording to The Salt Lake Tribune. Sloop was scheduled to appear in court in the city of Farmington for an evi- dence hearing but instead pleaded guilty to aggra- vated murder and ob- structing justice as part of a deal with prosecutors. Second District Court Judge Thomas Kay then sentenced Sloop to serve 20 years to life behind bars. Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings said the plea deal allows the boy's biological father, Joe Stacy, to heal and avoid witness- ing a trial and possible ap- peals, The Standard-Ex- aminer reported. Sloop failed to stop her husband and Ethan's step- father, Nathanael Sloop, from abusing her son and didn't call for medical help, the prosecutor said. She helped hide the boy's body and lied to police, Rawlings said. A medical examiner tes- tified in his case last year that Ethan died from a combination of too many over-the-counter medica- tions, severe burns and pneumonia. Nathanael Sloop, 35, then used a hammer to disfigure the boy's face be- fore burying his body in the northern Utah moun- tains, authorities said. He is serving 25 years to life in prison for killing his step- son after he pleaded "guilty and mentally ill" to aggra- vated murder in February. Stacy, who lives in Vir- ginia, was in court Mon- day but declined to make a statement during the hear- ing, the Tribune reported. He had sent Ethan to live with his mother as part of a divorce agree- ment. The boy died 10 days after arriving in Utah. When he called to talk with his son, Stacy said Stephanie and Nathanael Sloop told him Ethan was asleep or playing outside.
