ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter ORLAND JoeSalinthonescored a 60-yard touchdown for the Or- land Trojans on their first play from scrimmage. It would be that type of night for the fourth-seeded Trojans during their 51-30 win over the fifth-seeded Corning Cardinals in a Northern Section Division- III first round playoff game. Orland ran for 396 yards, av- eraging 10.7 yards per carry on 37 rushing attempts. The Trojans (10-1) had five touchdown runs of 20-plus yards and seemed dead set on forcing a rematch in the semifi- nals with Sutter, the only team to beat them this year. Arthur Flynn led the way with 167 yards on 13 carries, in- cluding two touchdowns. Juan Maldonado Jr. scored three times on seven carries for 55 yards. Dominic Garzoli added a 51- yard touchdown run of his own. While the Trojans running at- tack had it easy, the rest of the game was anything but. Despite the score, Corning lingered around within striking distance throughout the game. Corning, which finished their season 6-5, responded to Orland's opening score with a touchdown drive on their own, capped by the first of two Chance Nelson touchdown runs. Orland seemingly put the game out of the reach within the opening minutes of the second quarter when they sandwiched a pair of Maldonado touchdown runs around a safety, from a botched punt snap. But having gone from a 7-7 tie to trailing 23-7 in two minutes, the Cardinals responded again when Alex Davila brought the ensuing kickoff all the way back for a Corning score. Davila would finish with an- other rushing touchdown and 100 yards on 18 carries. Nelson provided 74 yards on 19 carries for the Cardinals. By Andre Byik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter PALO CEDRO The top-seeded Redding Christian Lions 8-man football team remained unbeaten Friday after running past the Mercy Warriors, 32-12, in the Northern Section CIF Division VI semifinal round. The visiting Mercy squad (6- 6, 4-2 South), which earned the South League's No. 2 seed, fell behind early and trailed the Li- ons 18-0 at the half. "They came out physical," Warriors coach Marvin Bene- field said. He added: "They came out and played hard, tough defense right off the bat. So, we didn't get it going early. It took a little bit for us to get our wheels going." Down 26-0 with about six minutes left in the third quar- ter, the Warriors put together a successful string of plays. Pro- ductive runs by quarterback Al House and a strong rush from William Gentry resulted in a 15-yard touchdown run by Eli- jah Gash. The Lions (12-0, 6-0 North), however, needed just three plays to counter on their next possession, which resulted in a 40-yard TD pass from Frankie Aventino to Gabe Coleman. Aventino rarely appeared uncomfortable save for a short injury break and finished the HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS MercyfallstotopseedReddingChristian Warriorscan'tsolve Lions offense in semifinal round ANDRE BYIK โ€” DAILY NEWS Mercy High School's Koleby Potter, center, runs the ball against Redding Christian during the Northern Section CIF 8-man football semifinals Friday at Redding Christian High School. By Janie Mccauley The Associated Press SANTACLARA The San Francisco 49ers might be getting closer to adding a couple of big names back to their injury-depleted defense. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman's 21-day evaluation window is set to begin Tuesday. That means he could start practicing again this week as the Niners determine whether he will be able to play this season following a devastat- ing left knee injury in last Jan- uary's NFC championship game that required surgery. "With NaVorro, we'll see where he falls and how much he can do," coach Jim Harbaugh said, noting Bowman initially might be lim- ited to walk-throughs or individ- ual drills. Bowman tore the anterior cru- ciate and medial collateral liga- ments in his left knee in the loss to eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle. By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA โ€“ Raiders coach Tony Sparano said Monday night his intent every week is to get in the left lane and go fast. Sparano was talking about all three phases, but where the Raid- ers continue to get stuck in traf- fic is on offense, where they've stalled out in terms of gaining yards and scoring points with rookie quarterback Derek Carr at the wheel. In four of the last five games, the Raiders have gained 233 yards or less on offense, with a 387-yard effort against Cleveland the lone exception. Even in that game, the Raiders managed just 13 points. Carr has had rookie moments in each of the last two games, hav- ing a snap glance off his hands be- fore he was ready for a lost fumble against San Diego and pitching a forward pass to Khalif Barnes against Denver, believing he was running back Darren McFadden. With the NFL's 32nd-ranked running game, Carr needs to carry the offense with his arm, and in the four games under 233 yards he is averaging 4.9 yards per passing attempt. His 5.6 yards per attempt overall figure is the lowest of any NFL starting quar- terback.
