ByMarilynAdams Everydayofyourlifeis stamped with God's pur- pose for you. I love the verse in Job 42:2 which says, "I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You." What is God's purpose for your life? What does He have planned for you specifi- cally? The answer is as- tounding. He chose you to receive His gift of ever- lasting life. Ephesians 1:4 says, "Just as He chose us in Him before the founda- tion of the world, that we should be holy and with- out blame before Him in love." Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." How is it possible when we are all born into sin? Je- sus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross to pay the full penalty of your sin. He took your place. He made it possible for you to have eternal life in His presence forever. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." Titus 3:5 says, "Not by works of righ- teousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us..." As we contrast those two verses, we understand that our righteousness is the work of sin. His righteous- ness is given to us by the One who knew no sin. The moment we ac- cept the Lord as our per- sonal Savior and Lord, He gives us His righteous- ness, or right standing with God. The Holy Spirit then begins the work of righteousness in us. He- brews 13:21 says, "Make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen." I like the word work- ing because immediately it gives me two pictures. One is a potter working water into the clay so it is eas- ily shaped, and the other is kneading bread dough to work in the yeast so it per- meates every particle. The more God's word is worked into our hearts, the more we will be con- formed to His image. Ro- mans 8:29 says, "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son..." The work of conforming us contin- ues through our entire walk with the Lord on this earth. Psalm 23:3 tells us that He leads us in the paths of righteousness for His name sake. His gift of righteousness continues on throughout eternity. Seeking to walk united with His will in every pur- pose, thought, and ac- tion is to be our prior- ity. Matthew 6:33, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteous- ness, and all these things shall be added to you." We cannot do this in our own strength. It requires yielding to the Holy Spirit. He is the One who em- powers us. Galatians 5:16 says, "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh." If you have never re- ceived Jesus as your per- sonal Savior, you can right now. Confess that you are a sinner. Acknowledge that your way of doing things has led you down the wrong paths. Romans 10:13 says, "For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." MarilynAdamsaccepted the Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that cruci- ble of affliction, the Lord wooed her into an inti- mate relationship with Him. He taught her time- less truths that sustain her, and still permeate her present teachings. GOD TALK God'spurposeforyou By Jenny Barchfield The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO Latin Americans born into Ro- man Catholic families have increasingly left the faith for Protestant churches, while many others have dropped organized reli- gion altogether in a major shift in the region's reli- gious identity, according to a survey released Thursday. While 84 percent of Latin American adults re- port they were raised Cath- olic, only 69 percent cur- rently identify as such, said the Pew Research Cen- ter in Washington. At the same time, Protestants have gained members. About one in 10 Latin Americans were raised Protestant, but nearly one in five now call themselves Protestant. About 4 percent of Latin Americans report they were raised with no religion, but 8 percent say they have no tie to any faith. The survey, conducted between October 2013 and February 2014, outlines the challenge for Catho- lic leaders in a region that was once a stronghold for the faith. Latin America still has about 425 million Catholics, or 40 percent of adherents worldwide, ac- cording to the poll. But the exodus from the church continues. The losses were part of the reason for the 2013 election of Pope Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argen- tina, who is the first Latin American pontiff. In most countries of the region, two-thirds or more respon- dents held positive views of Francis. But the authors of the Pew report said for- mer Catholics are more skeptical of the pope than those still in the church, with only a majority of ex- Catholics in Argentina and Uruguay viewing him fa- vorably. According to Pew, the percentage of Catholic-born people flocking to Protes- tant churches has steadily grown in recent decades in nearly all 18 countries and Puerto Rico where the poll was conducted. "In most of the coun- tries surveyed, at least a third of current Protestants were raised in the Catholic Church, and half or more say they were baptized as Catholics," the authors of the report said. Former Catholics who have embraced Protestant- ism most frequently cited a desire for a personal con- nection with God for leav- ing their original faith. Oth- ers said they wanted a dif- ferent style of worship or a church that helps its mem- bers more. The most Catholic coun- tries were Mexico, with 81 percent Catholics and 9 per- cent Protestants, and Para- guay, with 89 percent Cath- olics and 7 percent Protes- tants.
