Newman will race for the title against Harvick, Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin, a trio that has combined for 10 victories this season. The first of the four drivers to cross the finish line wins the cham- pionship, but France feels confident the champion will also win the race. He often references the 2011 finale when Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards waged a lap-by-lap battle for 400 miles for the cham- pionship. Stewart won the race, finished tied in the standings with Edwards and won the title on the tie-breaker. That epic race was one of many instances that illustrate how champi- onship contenders seem to hit a higher gear over the final month of the season. "What we've seen, if you go through past years, is how those teams will be el- evating their game against everybody else," France said. With four drivers now in the championship field, France believes the finale to be remembered for a very long time. "I think depending on what happens on Sunday, it has a chance to be one of the most successful sea- sons in NASCAR history," he said. His enthusiasm for the Chase is understandable. France introduced the for- mat in 2004 and it has un- dergone several tweaks over the years before this season's radical over- haul. He said there would be "very modest to zero" tweaks to the Chase dur- ing the offseason. That's an unpopular de- cision for the fans of Jeff Gordon and Keselowski, who were both eliminated last week. Gordon had four wins this season and was outstanding in the third segment of the Chase, but a flat tire from contact with Keselowski at Texas led to a championship-ending 29th-place finish. Keselowski had a se- ries-best six wins this sea- son and won in the first and second segments to advance. Many believe the system is flawed be- cause the best teams did not make it to the finale, a theory Keselowski de- bunked Friday. "Fyi- I'm not upset," he tweeted. "It was possi- ble in any & every #NAS- CAR championship for- mat to win the title with no wins and lose title with the most." Keselowski did upset several of his peers with his aggressive driving, and the confrontations led to fights after two different Chase races. Matt Kenseth grabbed him from behind after the Charlotte race, and a confrontation with Gordon at Texas led to a brawl that left both driv- ers bloodied. NASCAR sus- pended four Hendrick Mo- torsports crew members for the fight. France acknowledged NASCAR is walking a fine line when the intensity spills off of the track. He wants drivers to show emo- tion, but conceded it was an unwelcome spotlight when the fighting received wide attention that had casual sports fans talking about NASCAR. "If it goes too far, I don't think it's good for NAS- CAR, no matter how much publicity you get because you do erode your credi- bility no matter how much attention you get," he said. "We have to make sure it doesn't get to a place where it injures people." Chase FROM PAGE 1 zation, it's something that you'd be a fool to miss," Smith said. "It was a once in-a-lifetime thing, all those guys in a locker room getting ready for a game." Smith has 33.5 sacks over his first two NFL sea- sons but his wayward be- havior raised questions about his future. The so- called "legends" game took place not long be- fore Smith was sentenced to spend 11 days work- ing with a sheriff's work crew as punishment for pleading no contest to a drunken driving and weapons charge. The 49ers are hopeful that their talented star has his life back on track. Being around the team of Hall of Famers couldn't hurt. "I met up with a lot of guys who had reached out to me — Charles (Haley), Ronnie, Jerry, Joe. All of them," Smith said. "In the locker room, even though it was a flag football game, seeing them play around and get ready for the game was really cool." Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Thursday said that the 49ers had yet to decide how much Smith will be able to play against the Giants. Fangio said the linebacker was "rusty." Harbaugh was slightly rosier on Friday. "(It) looks like he's en- joying it," the coach said. "Having fun out there and that's been great to see." Notes • Nickel back Jimmie Ward has officially been ruled out of Sunday's game at the Giants, stemming from an injury to the same foot he needed surgery on before the draft. The ex- tent of Ward's injury is un- known. He's appeared in all but one game this sea- son, missing an Oct. 19 loss at Denver because of a quadriceps strain. Perrish Cox likely will move inside to cover slot receivers and Dontae John- son will be summoned as the No. 3 cornerback on passing downs, with Leon McFadden the only other active cornerback. Ward did not practice all week, nor did cornerback Tramaine Brock, who has a hamstring issue and is not expected to play Sunday. • The 49ers still need to make roster room if they're to activate Smith and/or nose tackle Glenn Dorsey, who can come off short- term injured reserve. • Nose tackle Ian Wil- liams also has been ruled out after fracturing his left leg last Sunday at New Or- leans. Quinton Dial or Tony Jerod-Eddie are candidates to start in Williams' place, as is Dorsey. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 yond their years," veteran offensive lineman Kha- lif Barnes said. "They're not playing like rookies. They're playing like vets. We don't have to sit around and develop these guys." Earlier this week, the NFL Network pegged the Raiders as having the best rookie class this season. Before that assessment, the NFL Network con- ducted a redraft of the top 10 players based upon the information gleaned from watching the rookies play the first 10 weeks. Mack was tabbed as the No. 1 pick — he actu- ally went to the Raiders at No. 5 — and Carr the third pick, whereas the Raiders got him at No. 36 in the real draft. Left guard Gabe Jack- son, nose tackle Justin Ellis and cornerback T.J. Carrie have also developed into significant contributors, if not starters, right away. Even so, the Raiders haven't won a game this season despite Carr outper- forming the quarterbacks picked in the first round — Blake Bortles (No. 3 over- all, Jaguars), Johnny Man- ziel (22, Browns) and Teddy Bridgewater (32, Vikings) — and Mack playing as if he were a seasoned veteran. That brings about the prospect of the Raiders get- ting the rights to the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft. That's yet another thing that will be enticing to pro- spective coaching candi- dates, unless owner Mark Davis and general man- ager Reggie McKenzie opt to stick with interim head coach Tony Sparano. If the Raiders are sold on Carr as the quarterback of the future, that puts them in the enviable position of trading the No. 1 pick to a team in desperate need of a quarterback.
