Americansof all stripes love to put down the en- tertainment indus- try. It is too vio- lent, too politically correct, not violent enough to be real- istic, not politically correct enough. We still watch. We flock to movies based on comic books and we make a television series like Modern Family a mega hit even though anyone who thinks it a realistic depic- tion of family needs to ac- tually spend time in one. Then along comes a hit based on heroism, patrio- tism and faithfulness and it is panned by critics. I re- fer to the just completed first season of the TNT se- ries — The Last Ship. A US Navy destroyer is on a mission in the Arc- tic when a global pan- demic breaks out. By the time they hear of the di- saster eighty per cent of the population is esti- mated infected or dead, they are under attack by rogue Russian forces, and they have lost contact with their chain of command — which appears to no lon- ger exist. Their new mission is to use the samples of the original virus collected in the Arctic as raw mate- rial by which the Centers for Disease Control doctor on board and on secret as- signment can create a vac- cine or antidote or both. As entertainment it cele- brates the highest incar- nation of the American character — including our traditional and dynamic reliance on God to draw out the fullness of our hu- manity. The cries of non-cred- ibility are expressed in terms of "no crew is that heroic or patriotic in the face of such a disaster;" or "no captain is that iron jawed;" or even "the per- formances are wooden and one- dimensional." In- asmuch as these are clearly NOT the main objections, let me knock down the straw men quickly. Crew members — from officers to rat- ings — show plenty of ambivalence about their mission and continued ser- vice in the face of the total breakdown of civilization. A score decide to leave the ship because their enlist- ments are up, but change their minds and re-up as a body. The show presents American military people as the flawed but utterly dedicated human beings the vast majority of them are; they are why I am so proud to be an American in the face of the savagery our people encounter on many battlefields with- out losing their human- ity, or the exceptionalism of our inception. The cap- tain has his moments of ambivalence — and errors in judgment — but he al- ways comes back to accept responsibility for his mis- steps and have another go at it. Most of the time he is a great example to his crew; in that he is doing his job, and nothing more nor less. The performances range from adequate to awesome with almost ev- ery character exhibiting — one way or another and sooner or later, after inter- nal struggle — that her- oism Ernest Hemingway defined as grace under pressure. My own credibility rant would focus on the cap- tain being a part of every foray off the ship. The cap- tain is the least expend- able crew member and ought to be minding the store. But we accepted this in every captain in every Star Trek from original to sequel to prequel and just went with it. It's still a television drama. Why not give Captain Chandler the same break we give Cap- tain Kirk? Why not is be- cause of the references to God. Really. The master chief tells the captain and others he has been placed on the ship by God and for his purposes. Numbers of the crew are observed praying in varying circumstances from the worshipful to the critical. In at least two ep- isodes miracles occur and there are other events open to that interpreta- tion. The captain has not yet revealed his faith or lack thereof; it is pretty clear the XO is a believer. As one would expect, there are varying degrees and visibilities of faith — and plenty of characters who exhibit none whatever. The crew is a mixed bag, just like the culture in which the rest of us live — in the real world. Nobody recoils in horror when the master chief prays for a miracle, reads his Bible, or says yet again that God has placed him on this ship for His purposes. In other words, faith is portrayed as a po- tent feature of everyday life. My prayer for this most excellent program is that it neither descend to a tele- vised Bible study nor blow away into the winds of po- litically correct New Agey nonsense. I pray the writ- ers and producers main- tain their integrity and their commitment to ex- cellence. And I pray when the new season begins in 2015 millions of Ameri- cans tune in to TNT at 9 p.m. Sundays. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Journey to Bethlehem set By Karin Laub The Associated Press JERUSALEM Hundreds of Palestinians knelt on prayer carpets in a Jerusa- lem street Friday, faced by a cordon of Israeli riot po- lice who blocked them from reaching Islam's third- ho- liest shrine in the nearby Old City. The worshippers eventu- ally dispersed peacefully, but the scene highlighted the escalating tensions over the holy site — a walled, hill- top plateau known to Mus- lims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount. Israel argues that re- stricting access to the shrine, which has been common in recent weeks, is needed to clamp down on growing unrest in the contested city of 810,000 people. On Friday, Muslims un- der age 35 were denied en- try, while restrictions were broader in preceding weeks. Jerusalem's Muslims, who make up about a third of the population, say the security clampdown only heightens fears that their traditional control of the holy site, home to the Al- Aqsa Mosque and the gold- topped Dome of the Rock, is under threat from Jew- ish zealots. In recent weeks, senior members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netan- yahu's coalition have called for a greater Jewish pres- ence and right to prayer on the mount, which is Juda- ism's holiest site, stirring Muslim worries about en- croachment. Under an ar- rangement in place since Israel's capture of the Old City and its shrines in 1967, the sacred plateau is ad- ministered by Muslims re- porting to Jordan, while Jews have a right to visit. Any perceived attempt to change the existing prayer arrangements at the shrine is seen by local Muslims as highly provocative. They say they view it as another threat to their sta- tus and identity. Many Pal- estinian residents of the city complain of high taxes for poor municipal services, compared with those of- fered in Jewish neighbor- hoods, as well as severe re- strictions on building per- mits. Mohammed Fakhouri, a 38-year-old shopkeeper in the Old City, said the re- strictions on prayer at the Al-Aqsa Mosque are the last straw, adding that he hasn't been able to attend for the past five weeks because of the age limits. "Like the Jewish people, we pay taxes, and we don't get anything from Israel," he said. "They don't let us build houses. ... If you can't go pray, what's after this?" Muslims from the West Bank face even greater dif- ficulties in reaching the shrine because they must have Israeli permits to en- ter Jerusalem. Those with permits pass through barbed-wire topped terminals in Isra- el's separation barrier, of- ten enduring long waits en route to the mosque. Earlier this week, Netan- yahu reassured Jordan's King Abdullah II that Is- rael would not change the status quo at the holy site and that Israeli politicians expressing a different view were not speaking for the government. Jordan had recalled its ambassador in protest after a police raid over a clash at the entrance to the mosque. On Friday, Netanyahu made no mention of those politicians, instead blam- ing "militant Islamic incite- ment" for the increasing vi- olence in Jerusalem.
