ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter ANDERSON The Corning Car- dinals did their part with a 30- 27 road win over the Anderson Cubs Friday and a few miles south they got the help they needed with West Valley beat- ing Lassen. The combination puts Corn- ing (6-3, 3-1) in strong position to grab a share of the Northern Athletic League title with a win next week at Yreka. "It puts us in a good position for a co-league championship, I think every player knows that and played extra hard for it," Corning's Quincy Jones said. The win over Anderson wasn't easy, but the Cardinals made the plays when they had to. Salvador Mora kicked a 21- yard field goal to give Corning a 24-21 lead with around five minutes to play. Corning's defense then did their job, stopping Anderson on fourth down when Jones sacked Cubs quarterback Mikey Maasen. Three plays later it appeared as if Corning had sealed the win when Chance Nelson muscled his way in from 19 yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the game to give the Cardi- nals a 30-21 lead just 1:47 re- maining on the clock. But Anderson had one last gasp. Grant Kingston ran the en- suing kickoff back 90 yards for a score and the Cubs pulled to within 30-27. With no time outs remain- ing, it came down to the onside kick, but it only traveled two yards and Corning polished off the remainder of the game clock. This was a back-and-forth game if there ever was one. Corning opened the scoring near the end of the first quar- ter when Nelson slipped out of the backfield uncovered and Wy- att Haydon floated him the ball for an untouched 45-yard touch- down pass. Anderson had been stopped their first two times inside the red zone, but midway through the second on their third trip, Maasen hooked up with Jacob Melton from 15 yards out to even the score 7-7. It didn't take long for Corn- ing to respond. Haydon found a streaking Avery Lamar up the sideline for a 31 score to regain the lead. Haydon would finish 4-for-10 for 100 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Nelson also passed for 24 yards on two com- pletions in as many attempts. Anderson knotted it back up before halftime when Maasen found Melton for a 45-yard pass- ing score of their own. Corning fumbled on the ensu- ing drive, but Anderson couldn't take the lead before halftime as they Maasen threw a ball that was picked off by the Cardinals at their own 4. The Cardinals won a field po- sition battle in the third quarter, which set up fourth-and-goal from the 2 to begin the fourth. Corning went for it and Nel- son punched it in for a 21-14 lead. Once again Anderson re- sponded. This time Maasen found Brandon Murphy from 44 yards out to knot the game 21-21. On Sunday they were rewarded that goal earning the South League's No. 2 seed and a home game against the North's No. 3 seed Hayfork (8-2). The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 8 at Sa- cred Heart Parish School. The Warriors (5-5, 4-2) did their part Saturday with a 64-0 trounc- ing of visiting Westwood on Se- nior Day led by a six-touchdown performance from Al House. They got a bit of a break as well as Greenville defeated Loy- alton 28-27. That left Mercy, Greenville and Loyalton each with a 4-2 league record, and each with a 1-1 record against each other. Despite Greenville's superior overall record of 6-4, Mercy got the nod for the No. 2 seed. The Warriors will have a re- match with Timberjacks from their Sept. 13 game, which Hay- fork won 42-26. But Mercy gradually improved their play and got players eligible, after that loss dropped them to 1-2 on the season. Despite a three-game losing streak midway through the sea- son, Mercy found a way to finish .500 overall. Defending champion Red- ding Christian (10-0) earned the North's top seed and will host Loyalton (5-5). The winner meets the Hayfork-Mercy winner in the semifinals. In the other half of the bracket the South's top-seed Princeton (8-2) hosts Butte Valley (4-5) and Greenville visits Big Valley (7-1). House rushed for 153 yards against Westwood.
