ByAndreByik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter CORNING Despite receiving a jolt of offense from its back- field, the Corning High School varsity football team couldn't tame the visiting Lassen Griz- zlies on Friday. The Grizzlies (5-2, 2-0 Northern Athletic League) en- joyed an efficient outing from quarterback Jordan Atkinson and three rushing touchdowns by Kyle Barnetche to overcome the Cardinals 39-21. For their part, the Cardi- nals kept the game competitive through the third quarter, and went to halftime tied at 14. Chance Nelson turned in an- other star performance for the Cards (4-3, 1-1 NAL), rushing for 180 yards on 15 carries and giving Corning its first lead on the night less than two min- utes into the game on a 59-yard TD run. After Lassen countered with a scoring drive late in the first quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Atkinson, Nelson preserved Corning's early 7-6 lead by blocking the Grizzlies' extra point attempt. The two NAL rivals traded scores in the second quarter; a 4-yard TD run by Lassen's Case Bennett, and a 2-yard TD run by Corning's Alex Davila, who returned to the field after suf- fering an injury early against Orland on Oct. 3. Davila was a spark for the Cards on their second-quar- ter scoring drive, and he fin- ished the game with 63 rush- ing yards on 19 carries. The Grizzlies struck first in the second half after At- kinson hooked up with Am- mon Breitenstein for 65-yards to the Corning 5, which led to a Barnetche 2-yard TD on the ground and a 20-14 Lassen ad- vantage. Atkinson finished the night 8-of-13 passing for 201 yards. Corning quarterback Wyatt Haydon was 1-of-6 passing for 22 yards. Corning's Nelson ran in a 40-yard TD — his second on the night — with about 3:57 left in the third quarter, and the Cards took a 21-20 lead to the final frame. Corning, which had an an- swer all night against Las- sen, would go scoreless in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies put up 19 unanswered points and remained undefeated in league play. The Cards are back in ac- tion against the lowly Central Valley Falcons (0-7, 0-2 NAL) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Shasta Lake. The Giants ace chugged four beers after beating Pittsburgh in the NL wild-card game, upped the count to five following the NL Division Series clincher against Washington and six when San Francisco won the NL Champi- onship Series over St. Louis.
