Mostpeople aren't paying atten- tion in the middle of summer when stores like Office Depot and Staples go crazy nearly giving away school supplies with their one-cent sales. How can they do it? They're willing to bet that most customers will grab up the bargains and then add a few full- priced items as well before they get to the checkout. The way to really save on all of your kids' back- to-school needs is to start early so you can cherry pick all the stores. Load up as you can to last the en- tire school year because you won't see these kind of bargains again until this time next year. School supplies. The Grocery Game has added a school supplies category to its lineup. Check it out: First log in at TheGrocer- yGame.com (you can get a four-week free trial, and you should), and then in the upper left select all stores in your area. Above the list items, click your mouse in the "Search" box, which will open up a "Cat- egory" box with drop- down menu. Select "School Supplies." Just look at the bargains! New items and deals constantly change, so log in each week and pick up the deals as you do your regular shopping. Fabric. I am thrilled that home sewing is com- ing back into vogue. If you're sewing clothes and household decorator items, you might have noticed just how expensive fab- ric is getting. My favor- ite source for fabulous bar- gains is Fabric.com, where they cut 39-inch yards (that's 3 extra inches on every cut) and offer free shipping both ways on or- ders of $35. (On occasion I've taken advantage of their 30-day "no questions asked" return policy.) The selection is nothing short of amazing. We're talking millions of yards of fabric in stock, including all the current designer lines, at any given time. Consignment. You'll find high-quality, name- brand, gently worn kids clothes and shoes at Th- redUp.com, an on- line consignment store at prices that make Wal-Mart look expensive! I have purchased items here for my grandson, and I'm still amazed by the prices, $2.99 shipping (free over $50), the quality of goods and customer service. Even if you aren't ready to buy, it's worth a browse. Shoes. The very active outlet site for Zappos is 6pm.com. Every day at 6 p.m., Zappos has to make room for new inventory, so sends slow-movers, discon- tinued and sale merchan- dise over to 6pm.com. Talk about bargains! You'll find discounts up to 70 percent on kids' clothes, shoes and accessories. Backpacks. Because they grow so fast, it is pointlessly expensive to dress children in brand- name clothes unless you can find them at rock bot- tom prices. But when it comes to items they will not outgrow, such as back- packs, opt for the best quality you can afford. Cheap backpacks will wear out before the end of one year, while a Jansport backpack will last a life- time. That's because Jans- port offers a guaranteed lifetime replacement war- ranty on all of its back- packs. If a zipper breaks, seam pops open or that warranted backpack gives out for any reason, send it to the company. They re- ally will fix or replace it. I have reports from readers whose kids took their orig- inal purchase in elemen- tary school on to college. On several occasions it wasn't the same backpack (due to replacements along the way), but they made that single purchase. Now that's what I call value! EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE: Bargainsonstuff kids need for school COURTESYPHOTOBYROSSPALUBESKI Red Bluff Fire and a St. Elizabeth ambulance were dispatched around 12:30p.m. Sunday to a reported vehicle into the First Church of God, 1035S. Jackson St. The first unit at scene reported one patient with CPR in progress. The patient was transported to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital with unknown injuries. The building had minor damage. ACCIDENT CAR DAMAGES CHURCH Are you, your spouse or a dependent heading off to college? If so, here's a quick tip from the IRS: some of the costs you pay for higher education can save you money at tax time. Here are several important facts you should know about ed- ucation tax credits: American Opportunity Tax Credit. The AOTC can be up to $2,500 an- nually for an eligible stu- dent. This credit applies for the first four years of higher education. Forty percent of the AOTC is re- fundable. That means that you may be able to get up to $1,000 of the credit as a refund, even if you don't owe any taxes. Lifetime Learning Credit. With the LLC, you may be able to claim a tax credit of up to $2,000 on your federal tax return. There is no limit on the number of years you can claim this credit for an el- igible student. One credit per student. You can claim only one type of education credit per student on your fed- eral tax return each year. If more than one student qualifies for a credit in the same year, you can claim a different credit for each student. For ex- ample, you can claim the AOTC for one student and claim the LLC for the other student. Qualified expenses. You may include qualified ex- penses to figure your credit. This may include amounts you pay for tu- ition, fees and other re- lated expenses for an eli- gible student. Refer to IRS. gov for more about the ad- ditional rules that apply to each credit. Eligible educational in- stitutions. Eligible schools are those that offer educa- tion beyond high school. This includes most col- leges and universities. Vo- cational schools or other postsecondary schools may also qualify. Form 1098-T. In most cases, you should receive Form 1098-T, Tuition State- ment, from your school. This form reports your qualified expenses to the IRS and to you. You may notice that the amount shown on the form is different than the amount you actually paid. That's because some of your related costs may not appear on Form 1098- T. For example, the cost of your textbooks may not appear on the form, but you still may be able to claim your textbook costs as part of the credit. Re- member, you can only claim an education credit for the qualified expenses that you paid in that same tax year. Nonresident alien. If you are in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa, you usu- ally file your federal tax re- turn as a nonresident alien. You can't claim an educa- tion credit if you were a nonresident alien for any part of the tax year unless you elect to be treated as a resident alien for federal tax purposes. To learn more about these rules see Publica- tion 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens. Income limits. These credits are subject to in- come limitations and may be reduced or eliminated, based on your income. For more information, visit the Tax Benefits for Education Information Center on IRS.gov. Also, check Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. You can get it on IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).
