Trinity's Ben Harper took the individual title with a time of 15:31. Corning was led by Edu- ardo Blancas in 24th place with a time of 17:16.20. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 dropped. One of the two Spartan interceptions was also un- der thrown into the end zone with two open play- ers. Perhaps the biggest killer was on West Val- ley's final drive of the sec- ond half. Leading 13-0 at the time Red Bluff forced two fumbles on the drive and had opportunities to recover both, but didn't. The Eagles drive con- tinued and Kody Karpin- ski capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kolbe Bravos in the wan- ing seconds for a three- score lead. Red Bluff averaged just 1.6 yards per play. Kendall R a schein kicked two field goals for West Valley. The Spartans head to Anderson next week. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 By David Ginsburg The Associated Press BALTIMORE Ray Rice was let go by the Baltimore Ra- vens on Monday and sus- pended indefinitely by the NFL after a video was re- leased showing the run- ning back striking his then-fiancee in February. The grainy video, re- leased by TMZ Sports, shows Rice and Janay Palmer in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing. Months ago, a TMZ video showed Rice dragging Palmer, now his wife, from the elevator at the Revel casino, which closed Sept. 2. Earlier Monday, the Ra- vens said they never saw the new video. Hours later, they sent out a one-sen- tence release: "The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this after- noon." The action represented a complete reversal for the team, even though an Atlantic City police sum- mons stated that Rice caused "bodily injury to Janay Palmer, specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her un- conscious." The Ravens had used words like "respect" and "proud" in referring to Rice following his arrest. When the NFL an- nounced Rice's two-game suspension for domestic violence on July 24, gen- eral manager Ozzie New- some said, "We respect the efforts Ray has made to become the best partner and father he can be. That night was not typical of the Ray Rice we know and re- spect. We believe that he will not let that one night define who he is, and he is determined to make sure something like this never happens again." LIONS 35, GIANTS 14 Mat- thew Stafford improvised brilliantly on two early touchdown passes to Cal- vin Johnson, and Detroit beat the New York Giants on Monday night in Jim Caldwell's first game as Li- ons coach. Stafford also ran for a TD for Detroit, which in- tercepted Eli Manning twice in the Lions' first Monday night opener since 1971. Detroit collapsed down the stretch last year and missed the postsea- son, and Jim Schwartz was fired and replaced by Caldwell. Stafford went 22 of 32 for 346 yards. Johnson had seven catches for 164 yards. NFL ROUNDUP Ravens cut RB Ray Rice a er release of video Gore. James had also lost his return duties to rookie receiver Bruce Ellington. The 24-year James was a second-round draft choice in 2012 after a spectacu- lar college career at Ore- gon and was entering his third season. But the 5-9, 195-pound back was beset by injury and ineffective- ness for much of his time with the 49ers. James played just four games as a rookie, carrying 27 times for 125 yards, add- ing three receptions for 29 yards. He did perform well in the 2012 postseason, car- rying 11 times for 65 yards (5.9 average) and scored the only touchdown of his 49ers career in the 49ers' 28-24 NFC Championship Game at Atlanta on a 15-yard run. He played in 10 games in 2013, but mostly as a re- turner. He carried just 12 times from scrimmage for 59 yards and had just two receptions for 16 yards. He did return 23 punts for a 10.9-yard average. Over his two seasons, he also re- turned 26 kickoffs, his lon- gest a 62-yarder as rookie. Notes • Harbaugh intimated that the 49ers' have not al- tered their stance on defen- sive lineman Ray McDon- ald's status with the team in light of developments re- garding running back Ray Rice. Rice was promptly cut by the Baltimore Ravens, coached by Harbaugh's brother John, and also suspended indefinitely by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the wake of a graphic video released by TMZ on Monday morning showing Rice punching his fiancée, knocking her un- conscious, and then drag- ging her from an elevator. The 49ers allowed Mc- Donald to play in the season opener at Dallas on Sunday, just a week after he was ar- rested on suspicion of felony domestic violence. McDon- ald has not been charged, and Goodell informed the club the league would let the legal process play out before deciding whether to take action. Asked if Rice's contract termination will have an ef- fect on how the 49ers move forward with McDonald, Harbaugh said, "We've been very clear, actually, on what principles are at play here and I don't know how we can be more clear." •Harbaughhadnoinjury updates on defensive backs Chris Culliver and Jimmie Ward, both of whom sus- tained concussions against Dallas, or cornerback Tre- maine Brock, who suffered a toe injury. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 MLBBASEBALL Oakland Athletics at Chicago White Sox:5 p.m., CSN. St.LouisCardinals: Recalled INF Greg Garcia, OF Tommy Pham and RHP Sam Tuivailala from Memphis (PCL). Designated C Audry Perez and OF Rafael Ortega for assignment. many days the A's bull- pen couldn't hold a one- run lead in the ninth in- ning. Five walks from Ryan Cook (three) and Fernando Abad (two) had produced two runs that cost the A's in a 4-3 loss to the Astros Sunday in Oakland. With Monday's game tied at 3-3, A's pinch- hitter Alberto Callaspo opened the eighth with a walk against reliever Eric Surkamp, then pinch-run- ner Billy Burns stole sec- ond. Coco Crisp caught a break when his fly to left fell in front of Dayan Viciedo for a single, mov- ing Burns to third. That set up Fuld, and the left-handed hitter pushed a bunt past the mound on the first base side and beat it out as Burns crossed the plate. The A's had taken a 3-2 lead on back-to-back hom- ers from Josh Reddick and Jed Lowrie in the fifth, but a Conor Gillaspie homer off A's starter Sonny Gray in the sixth tied it. Gray overcame early control issues to throw seven innings, giving up four hits and three runs, two of them earned. Gray has pitched well for the A's most of the time this season, but when he's had problems, it's frequently been in the first inning. And so it was Monday when he walked the first two men he faced and both would come around to score. Gray has walked 67 batters this season, and 15 of them have come in the first; he hasn't walked more than 10 in any other inning.
