ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter REDBLUFF TheRedBluffSpar- tans were beat and beat up dur- ing their home opener Friday against the visiting West Val- ley Eagles. The defending Division 2 sec- tion champions Eagles turned a pair of first half interceptions into two touchdowns on route to a 33-13 win. Down 20-0 Red Bluff quarter- back Kade Lewis was knocked out of the game midway through the third quarter when he took a helmet-to-helmet hit as he dropped back to pass. West Valley's defensive line penetration was a problem for Red Bluff the entire game. The penalty gave Red Bluff just its second first down of the night, the first also came the re- sult of an illegal hit on Lewis. Walker Dodero took over at quarterback and his big, bruis- ing running style sparked some needed life into the Spartans. Red Bluff coach Corey Hein said the plan was to bring Dodero in as quarterback just for one series with a special package of his plays, but his run- ning energized the crowd and he decided to stick with the hot hand the rest of the way. Red Bluff was further helped when West Valley botched a punt return that the Spartans recovered at the Eagles 11-yard- line. A handful of plays later Dodero took it in from a yard out on a second effort to make the game 20-6 early in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans couldn't keep West Valley off the board as the Eagles' running attack wore down Red Bluff through- out the night. "We just don't have a lot of depth on our line and a lot of our guys are going ways right now," Hein said. Chace Savage scored on a 3-yard run to put West Valley up 26-6. Brody Jones later added his second touchdown of the game to go along with his two first half interceptions. Dodero hooked up with Aaron Lyon on a 5-yard touch- down pass with a minute left to give Red Bluff one last score. In between Red Bluff lost line- men Travis Jensen and Dallas Hethcoat to injury. Late in the game receiver Joseph Bosetti broke his collar bone. Red Bluff had its chances early, which Hein said could have been real emotional lifts if executed. The Spartans coaching staff dialed up a double reverse pass that left a Red Bluff player wide open behind the Eagles defense, but the for sure touchdown was FOOTBALL Spartansshell-shocked bybruisingWestValley Defending section champion Eagles take advantage of turnovers to build lead WestValleyquarterbackKodyKarpinskipicksupyardageagainsttheRedBluffdefenseFriday. By John Hickey Bay Area News Group CHICAGO Tyler Flowers, who tied the game with two out in the ninth inning with a solo homer, gave the Chicago White Sox a 5-4 lead over the A's with a solo homer in the 12th inning off Oakland reliever Jesse Chavez. The walkoff homer was the first of Flowers' career, and it was yet another dagger in the postseason hopes of the A's. Oakland (80-63) lost for the ninth time in its last 11 games. The last two losses have come with the A's having held a one- run lead in the ninth inning. Chavez was facing just his sec- ond batter after Dan Otero had pitched shutout relief in the 10th and 11th innings. After the long ball got the A's back into the game, little ball gave the A's a late lead with Sam Fuld's eighth inning bunt single scoring Billy Burns from third base. But Oakland, one strike away from a win in regulation, was de- nied when Eric O'Flaherty, the closer with Sean Doolittle still on the shelf, was stung by a two- out homer to Flowers to force ex- tra innings. The 49ers now have just two active backs on the roster, vet- eran Frank Gore and rookie Car- los Hyde.
