F CUSOn Fayetteville Property Gets Extreme Makeover The All-America City of Fayetteville will bask in the national spotlight again this year when a local property is featured on a fall episode of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The Steps-and-Stages Jubilee House, a resource center for homeless female veterans, was torn down and reconstructed last week to provide more room and services for the veterans. The property, located at 120 Langdon St., which is owned by 15-year Navy veteran Barbara Marshall, was visited on the July 21 “Move That Bus” reveal date by First Lady Michelle Obama. It was Mrs. Obama’s second visit to Fayetteville. She made a stop in the city in March 2009 and publicly endorsed Fayetteville’s mission of “Watching Over Those Who Watch Over Us.” That mission is clearly what the Jubilee House is all about. The facility provides housing and support services, and the new center can serve multiple families and act as a resource center for female veterans. The Fayetteville community has thoroughly supported the Extreme Makeover project. The Fayetteville Police Department and Fire Department provided on-scene security and other on-site services, including EMS services. Countless volunteers helped build the house and work on the construction site with Blue Ridge Log Cabins, the homebuilder. Local military support organizations, like the Army’s Army, also assisted. With the park’s dedication July 4, Walter Street and Hillsboro Street reopened. In the past, Walter Street served as more of a connector to Bragg Boulevard, but now its purpose has changed. “It’s more of a campus-type roadway to get you to the Engineer Rusty Thompson said. “With the opening of the park, many pedestrians are crossing the road to get to the Visitors Center.” The North Carolina Veterans Park is expected to draw an estimated 250,000 visitors annually, many of which will be young school-aged children and elderly veterans. To ensure safety, the City is posting 15 mph speed limit signs. Pedestrian warning signs will be put up and a three-way stop will be placed near the Visitors Center and walkway. “These measures will increase pedestrian safety and are intended to slow motorists,” Thompson said. City Manager Dale Iman commented, “We are city while remaining dedicated to our goal of increased connectivity for our citizens and visitors.” For more information about the North Carolina Veterans Park, log onto www.ncveteranspark.org. 20 11 Code Enforcement Numbers Indicate Hard Work, More Attractive City The City of Fayetteville has been hard at work over the past few years to improve the appearance and image of Fayetteville. Listed as a Strategic Plan goal, working to improve the City’s appearance is evidenced by the dramatic increase in the number of code enforcement violations. Code enforcement violations have increased substantially over the past year across the city, jumping from 5,258 citywide violations in 2009 to 9,476 violations in the 2010 calendar year. “City Code Enforcement staff has been hitting the pavement hard the last couple years and we’ve been fortunate to have a full staff over the last few months,” City Manager Dale Iman said. “Bart Swanson and his staff have done a tremendous job of holding owners accountable, and, thus, looking out for the safety of citizens. Not only do the violations indicate that staff is looking out for the appearance of Fayetteville and safety of its citizens, but they show we are helping residents by addressing issues early-on, while the running into more costly issues down the road.” staff member fully devoted to the area since April.
