County Departments Receive Grants Recently, three County departments have been awarded grants, which will be used for programs and services to our citizens. The library system has received a $100,000 Library Services and G Technology Act (LSTA) grant to purchase equipment to fully implement This technology will transfer data between library materials and an electronic tag attached to the books or other items for the purpose of As a result, customers will be able to check out their own materials, This technology is already in use at two libraries, Bordeaux and West Regional; and with this grant, and matching funds from the county, it can now be implemented at the other six locations this year. The library also received a $10,000 grant for teen programming from the Youth Growth Stock Fund. The money will be used to purchase laptop computers and other equipment at Cliffdale Regional Branch Library. The Health Department has received a $220,000 grant to establish the Cumberland County Diabetes Education Program, and the Community Development Department has received a $37,500 grant through the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency for its Urgent Repair Program (URP). Two County projects are among those competing in the Golden LEAF Community Initiative, which is bringing $2 million to Cumberland County. One is a sewer extension project for Vander and the other is a “Workforce Development at your Library” proposal to establish mobile laptop computer training labs in our public libraries. Gardening Workshops in August of Gardening Series will provide classes on soils and fertilizers; lawn care; Thursday starting on Aug. 4 for four weeks. The classes will start at 6 p.m. and last about two hours. The workshop will be held in the Auditorium of Cooperative Extension, located at 301 East Mountain Dr. in Fayetteville. Pre-registration is requested and is due by July 29. There is a non- refundable $15 registration fee to cover materials. C Growing Up WILD is an early childhood education program that builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and their habitats, with an emphasis on promoting aquatic resource appreciation and stewardship. Through a wide range of activities and experiences, Growing Up WILD provides an early foundation for developing positive impressions about nature and lifelong social and academic skills. The day-long workshop is primarily targeted toward formal and non- T formal educators, who work with children ages 3-7.
