Connie Karges '51 Gives Back for What Alpha Chi Gave Her Sharing Stories and Vision for the Future A s a young, college student eager to find her home away from home, Connie Karges '51 admits that she found an instant connection with Xi Chapter members during recruitment. What she didn't realize at the time, however, is just how influential and lasting relationships with Alpha Chi sisters would be. She says that being from a small town and receiving the opportunity to meet such diverse, active young women helped broaden her view of the world and shape her future success. By contributing to the remodeling of the chapter house, Connie says she feels confident that undergraduates have a place to foster relationships like those she experienced nearly 65 years ago. "Like all houses Alpha Chi needs upkeep, and if we aren't doing it then who will? Making sure the house is properly maintained is what makes it a home and part of the reason we keep recruiting such wonderful new members." Even as an alumna, Connie lends her time in the kitchen during recruitment to help with the last-minute details. Without donations and support from volunteers, Connie says the chapter wouldn't be as successful as it is today. Connie reminisces about Homecoming events and dances with fraternities, some of her most cherished memories. The experiences she so fondly recalls have become an inherent part of who she is. "I'm deeply thankful for my years as an Alpha Chi both as an undergraduate and an alumna. It has been and always will be a part of my life that I will treasure." Connie encourages undergraduates to enjoy the day-to-day excitement you get living in the chapter house. "Cherish the times you have together; it's amazing how fast it goes." Connie enjoys volunteering with her church, sewing, quilting, and playing bridge with friends. While Connie doesn't get a chance to visit the chapter house as often as she would like, she stays in contact with the friends she made as an undergraduate. She especially looks forward to the last Friday of each month, when she and Alpha Chi sisters enjoy catching up over lunch in Lincoln. E-mail: gilandconnie@neb.rr.com In Memoriam Gayle Anderstrom '36 entered chapter eter- nal peacefully on January 4 in Vero Beach, Florida, after a short illness. She was born in Adams, Nebraska, on August 24, 1915, to Clifford and Eva Caley. Gayle gradu- ated from Springfield High School in 1933 and from the Univer- sity of Nebraska in 1937 with a degree in mathematics. She was a proud Alpha Chi Omega alumna for over 75 years. Growing up in the 1930s, Gayle was the first female on the inter-high school tennis team in the state of Nebraska. In her adult life this continued, playing tennis well into her 80s and golf in her 90s. There was no televised sport that escaped her interest, though her favorite sport was college football. She knew the coaches, the players, the Heisman winners, the greats and not-so-greats through the years, and she judged every college team by its history of wins and losses to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Gayle was a charter member of the first golf club in Loup City, Nebraska, as well as Loup City's Dramatic Club and 500 Club. She enjoyed teaching mathematics and English (Continued on page 4)
