NICKWASS—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) throws to a receiver in the first half of a preseason game Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore. ByDavidGinsburg TheAssociatedPress BALTIMORE If the Baltimore Ra- vens' performance in their preseason opener served as a sneak preview for the regular season, then Gary Ku- biak's new offensive scheme could be a smash hit. Joe Flacco produced an 80-yard touchdown drive in his only series, and the Ravens amassed 386 yards in offense en route to a 23-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Thurs- day night. It was the third time in three tries that Ravens coach John Harbaugh got the best of his brother, Jim Har- baugh, coach of the 49ers. Baltimore previously defeated San Francisco on Thanksgiving 2011 and in the Super Bowl ending the 2012 season. "We've got some work to do," Jim Harbaugh said. Especially on defense. "That's probably the biggest con- cern coming out right now," Jim Har- baugh noted. "We got pushed around a little bit." Each team played its starting unit for one series before the back- ups took over. After Colin Kaepernick moved the 49ers 66 yards for a field goal, Flacco made himself right at home in Ku- biak's variation of the West Coast of- fense, going 4 for 5 for 52 yards dur- ing a 10-play scoring drive. "Ten plays in a new offense, that doesn't happen very often," wide re- ceiver Steve Smith said. "We were high tempo, high paced, so that went well." Kubiak, the former head coach of the Houston Texans, replaced offen- sive coordinator Jim Caldwell, now Detroit's head coach. "The execution by the offense on our first drive was what we like to see," John Harbaugh said. The first hint of the Raiders' new identity will be on display to- night (5 p.m.) in their preseason opener against the Minnesota Vi- kings at TCF Bank Stadium. The offseason and training camp has been full of promise, given an influx of veteran players and a rookie class that could con- tribute right away. Quarterback Matt Schaub will make his Raiders debut, although it will probably be little more than a cameo appearance with the first team. Acquired for a sixth-round draft pick in March, Schaub has seen nothing but the black uni- forms of the Raiders defense. "Once you put on that jersey for real, which is in the preseason, you are out there representing the Raider Nation," Schaub said. "It starts here. It started in March when I came here. This time, the best player in American history decided to walk away for good. The 32-year-old Donovan an- nounced Thursday he will re- tire from professional soccer at the end of the MLS season, wrap- ping up the most prolific career in the league's history with one last run at a championship with the L.A. Galaxy. "I think for the last few years, I haven't had the same passion that I had previously in my career," Donovan said at the Galaxy's sta- dium. "To some extent, I had felt obligated to keep playing. ... It's time to enjoy the rest of the sea- son, and there would be no bet- ter way than to go out as a cham- pion, so that's what I want to do." Ryan Braun was in a similar po- sition in the outfield, having come up short in a diving bid to reach Pagan's leadoff flare to right field. With that, Pagan was back and back on base — but his re- turn wasn't enough for an over- matched San Francisco Giants lineup. Pagan had two well-placed sin- gles but the Giants struck out 12 times while falling 3-1 in the se- ries finale with the Milwaukee Brewers. The result might have been secondary, though. The day was a win the second Pagan's name was put on the lineup for the first time since June 14. "I know we lost and every- thing, but I can see something good coming," Pagan said. "We're still in this fight, we're still in the running. We're a couple games be- hind but we've got time to get on a roll and finish strong." The Giants went 18-26 in the 44 games Pagan missed with a bulging disk and inflammation in his lower back. His presence was felt immediately, with the Giants loading the bases in the first after Pagan's leadoff single. They failed to score. Pagan had another sin- gle in the fifth, moving Jake Peavy over to second. The pitcher scored a batter later on Hunter Pence's single. Pagan came up as the tying run in the top of the seventh but struck out looking on the eighth pitch of the at-bat from Wily Per- alta, a 97 mph fastball at the knees.
