Mount Shasta will provide a dramatic presence for Shasta- Yama 2014, celebrating a taiko summit of the most honored and respected Japanese drum artists in America on Saturday evening, July 26 at Mount Shasta's Shas- tice Park. Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka and San Francisco Taiko Dojo and Master Kenny Endo and the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble will headline an exciting expanded ShastaYama show. Also appear- ing will be Masato Baba, Michelle Fujii, and Toru Watanabe, repre- senting the leaders of a new taiko generation. The Shasta Taiko community group, led by taiko pioneers and Shasta Taiko and ShastaYama founders Russel Baba and Jeanne Mercer, will also perform, sharing the stage with more than 30 dy- namic performers in a grand cele- bration of taiko, dance and music. The setting for the show will be at the base of Mount Shasta in Shastice Park. ShastaYama is the largest outdoor taiko festival in the country. Tanaka introduced modern taiko to America, and his group, the San Francisco Taiko Dojo cel- ebrated their 45th year in 2013. Tanaka has been honored for ar- tistic excellence and authenticity and recognized for his contribu- tions by both American and Jap- anese governments. He and his troupe have toured worldwide and performed in prestigious venues and with esteemed musicians, in- cluding Tony Bennett, Dave Bru- beck, Art Blakey, Bobby McFerrin, and Max Roach, to name a few. They have been featured in ma- jor motion pictures — "The Right Stuff," "Rising Sun," "Return of the Jedi," and "Apocalypse Now." Master Kenny Endo is the first American and foreigner to re- ceive a "natori" — Japanese stage name and master's license. Endo has been influential in introduc- ing America to Japanese classi- cal and festival drumming and is recognized world-wide for the use of taiko in contemporary compo- sitions. He is a prolific composer and has performed for Michael Jackson, Prince, and Princess Di- ana and Prince Charles. He has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Honolulu Sym- phony, and the Tokyo Symphony, and is featured on the soundtracks for "Picture Bride" and "Apoca- lypse Now" and recorded in mo- tion capture suit for "Avatar." ShastaYama 2014 will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at Shastice Park — Rockfellow and Adams Drive. Gates open at 5 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available.
