LastFridayandSat- urday CattleWomen sis- ters across the nation were working on the same proj- ect, sampling a delicious beef recipe to encourage beef purchases in-stores. CattleWomen volunteers worked alongside retail demonstrators to sell beef from the meat case and in- teract with shoppers. Our Beef Ambassador Danielle Mueller, Tehama County CattleWoman Linda Borror and I were in Yuba City at Sam's Club working with demonstra- tor Kristi Leaty. It was a great day, thanks to our demonstrator. She should be an honorary Cattle- Woman, she was so pas- sionate about beef. She never called it tenderloin, but invited the people to taste the filet mignon she was preparing in a field of greens. People were stand- ing, waiting for her to slice the beef while she prepared another three filets for the recipe. Our beef ambas- sador got real experience talking to consumers, and giving out the recipe. There were beef recipe demonstrations with cat- tlewomen at Sam's Clubs in Auburn and Montgom- ery, AL; Fayetteville and Little Rock, AR; Phoenix, AZ; Sacramento and Yuba City; Farmington, NM; St. Cloud, MN; Gulfport, Tu- pelo, Meridian MS; Lin- coln, NE; Lima and Co- lumbus, OH; Edmond and Owasso, OK; College Sta- tion and El Paso, TX; Riverdale , UT and Chey- enne, WY at the same time and dates. California CattleWomen Malorie Bankhead, Mela- nie Fowle, Nancy Hawkins, Bev Tipton were also working during the two days because it has been found that when Cattle- Women volunteers work alongside store demonstra- tors, pound sales have in- creased as much as 151% versus stores where Cattle- Women were not present. At our store, we moved 13 trays of filet mignon weighing about two and a half pounds each, at $13.98 a pound during the six hours we were there. A 40% increase in daily sales, I learned. I was so pleased that we did so well, because ground beef was on sale nearby in the meat case. Highschoolrodeo The National Fi- nals High School Ro- deo in Rock Springs, WY has been this week, and nhsratv.com broadcast the events on-line. Chelsey Bushnell had a 2.96 in breakaway roping for 7th in performance 3, and 26th in the 1st go-round. It rained and there was a sand storm the evening she competed. Wyatt Brown was 4th in performance 6 at 7.02 in steer wrestling and 14th in 1st go-round. Colton Campbell, Klam- ath Falls, District 1 cow- boy was 2nd in 6th perfor- mance at 9.55 in tiedown roping, and 8th in the 1st go-round. Colby Demo, Gerber, District 3 cowboy had a 65 in performance 6 in bull riding, and 17th in 1st go. Bobby Vaughan, Dorris, riding for Oregon had a 79 in 2nd performance, and 3rd in first go. Livestock sale Western Video Market sold 100,000 head of cat- tle July 14-16 in their video sale at the Silver Legacy in Reno. Prices were amazing, when Holiday Ranch sold 105 steers at 400 pounds in Lakeview, Oregon for $3.03 a pound. 32 pairs of 2nd calf heifers with 225 pound calves at side sold for $2,950 a pair. 40 head of bred heifers weighing 1,075 pounds, that came from Boston Ranch in CA sold for $2,750 each. 200 weaned steers weighing 500 pounds sold for $2.93 a lb; on the Or- egon/Idaho border, while the 95 steers weighing 525 pounds sold for $2.83 a lb, and the 83 head of 600 lb steers sold for $2.65. The 210 heifer mates at 460 lbs sold for $ 2.81 a lb. We sold on the video one year and it was a great experience. Can't remem- ber what the steers sold for, but the sale represen- tative came to the ranch and video the steers on permanent pasture, since they had been weaned. Then Monday night of the sale was a prime rib dinner and dance cele- brating Ellington's birth- day, with fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen from the western states. From the pictures posted on the website, it looks like it was a great time had by everyone at the sale this year. The prices were high, but so are our expenses. Think how much die- sel and gasoline has gone up, to about $4 a gallon and I used to think $2 was high. If you irrigate your pastures or orchards, the PG&E bill makes you blink, when you open the envelope. If you irrigate from a stream, you might have had your water rights revoked, so the fish can have the water, and your pasture is turning brown. If you graze on federal lands, either Forest Ser- vice or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and a lightning strike starts a fire you not only lose your feed for now, but the gov- ernment will keep you from grazing for the next two years while it regrows. I have a friend in Mo- doc County whose fall feed was burned in one of these lightning storms, and has no place to go with her cat- tle. She doesn't want to sell, but it looks like the only op- tion she has. It didn't rain or snow much in that part of the state and the hay crop is very light this year. Many of the ranchers are hauling water to their cattle, and that is a cost in labor, fuel, and equipment. JeanBartonhasbeen writing her column in the Daily News since the early 1990s.
