ByDougFerguson TheAssociatedPress HOYLAKE,ENGLAND RoryMc- Ilroy only saw birdies at Royal Liverpool, mostly on his score- card, and even one pheasant that trotted across the eighth green as he was lining up a putt. That was but a minor interruption in his command performance Friday in the British Open. Once he made a birdie, and then another, nothing could stop McIlroy. Not another collapse in the second round. Not anyone in the field. And certainly not Ti- ger Woods. After a bogey on his opening hole stirred memories of an- other "Black Friday," McIlroy looked more like the Boy Won- der who won two majors in a runaway. With three birdies in his last four holes, he posted a second straight 6-under 66 to build a four-shot lead over Dustin Johnson. McIlroy spoke of an "in- ner peace," and the two secret words that triggered his pow- erful swing and set up birdie chances on just about every hole. "People call it the zone, peo- ple call it whatever," he said. "It's just a state of mind where you think clearly. Everything seems to be on the right track. I've always said, whenever you play this well, you always won- der how you've played so badly before. Marco Scutaro was out of the lineup Friday, Angel Pa- gan remains on a slow rehab pace and Matt Cain was wear- ing a sleeve on his barking right elbow. The Giants who took the field, however, looked energized by the four days off, bookending the break with another fireworks show. After hitting two grand slams on the final day of the first half, the Giants opened the sec- ond half with a 9-1 win over the Miami Marlins. They had 13 hits at spacious Marlins Park, includ- ing homers from Brandon Craw- ford and Pablo Sandoval. "I guess everybody had a good All-Star break," Madison Bumgarner said, smiling. The left-hander was the ben- eficiary for a second straight game. Bumgarner won last Sun- day, but wasn't pleased with how he pitched. He gave up just one run Friday, improving to 11-7. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday that the league has narrowed down the location of the 2015 draft to Los Angeles or Chicago. The event has been held in New York every year since 1965 and has been at Radio City Music Hall since 2006. Goodell said after a panel at the summer TV critics' meeting that 12 cities were interested in hosting the draft, according to the Los Angeles Times. But the league narrowed the finalists to Los Angeles and Chicago after Radio City officials told the NFL that the venue wouldn't be avail- able in April or May. Goodell said a final decision on the location could be made by late summer. He said the league is discussing different concepts for next year's draft because there is high inter- est and the NFL wants to be re- sponsive to its fans. By Jamey Keaten The Associated Press CHAMROUSSE, FRANCE If Vin- cenzo Nibali was looking happier Friday after the Tour de France rode into the Alps, here's why: His top rival fell out of contention, he gained nearly a minute on his next-biggest challenger and oh, he won Stage 13 to boot. On a sunbaked and melting Al- pine road, the 29-year-old Italian cemented his control of cycling's greatest race with a solo-finish victory that was an afterthought to gaining time on other title con- tenders. Team Sky's Richie Porte, who began the day in second, saw his title hopes all but vanish after he lost about 9 minutes to Nibali on the last climb along the grueling 122-mile trek from Saint-Etienne to Chamrousse ski station. Ever cautious, calm and under- stated after his stage win, Nibali noted that three big Alpine climbs still await today and other pun- ishing ascents are on tap in the Pyrenees next week. "For the coming days, I only know that I have to remain quiet," he said. But in the winner's circle, where he collected the yellow jer- sey for the 11th time this year, Ni- bali perhaps let slip a bit more happy emotion — knowing that a first Tour victory for an Italian since Marco Pantani in 1998 just got a little closer.
