The boy had just attended a cousin's birthday party and was walking to a Toomes Avenue res- idence around 1:15 p.m. When the boy reached the stop sign at Edith and Blackburn av- enues, an older black van with tinted windows pulled up along- side him, according to a Corning Police Department press release. The driver got out of the driv- er's seat and went to the mid- dle of the van opened the slid- ing door. The driver then told the boy to "come here" before reaching out to grab his arm. The boy pulled away without being touched and took off run- ning. The boy's mother called Corn- ing Police a short time later, logs show. The driver was described as being a white man in his mid 50s, balding with his brownish- orangeish hair combed over to conceal the balding. He had a mustache and wore oval glasses and was wearing a gray tank top. The van was described as be- ing a black older type van, pos- sibly late 70s, with tinted win- dows and both sides of the van appearing to be rusted. The license plate frame had "Redding" on it and the first number of the plate was possi- bly a "6." PUBLIC SAFETY Attemptedkidnappingfoiled 11-year-oldboysaysmantriedtopullhimintovaninCorning By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter RED BLUFF For the first time in three years the skies over Red Bluff lit up with a fireworks dis- play on Independence Day de- lighting residents with its length and spectacular grand finale. "Thank you everyone for all the positive feed back. We worked very hard to bring you this show. So excited that we did it," the Te- hama County Fireworks Commit- tee posted on its Facebook page Saturday. The city's Fourth of July cel- ebration has been in flux since 2008 when the Red Bluff Fire De- partment ended its decades of in- volvement with the show. The Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce took over the show's promotion, but ended its contributions in 2012. That year Red Bluff had no fire- works, but the lack of the show prompted the formation of the Tehama County Fireworks Com- mittee, a resident-led initiative to fund the show through grassroots efforts and business donations. Despite raising more than enough money for a show last year, high winds forced public safety officials to cancel the show. Fortunately Friday's winds died down by dusk and the show was given the go-ahead following a few test shots. The Cal Fire Tehama-Glenn Unit reported just one fire over the holiday, a small fire in the Bowman area, the cause of which is still under investigation. Cal Fire and the Red Bluff Po- lice Department were urging res- idents to take extreme caution when storing unused fireworks. Fire officials reported that de- spite the lack of fires they were busy over the weekend conduct- ing extensive patrols. Law enforcement was also out in high numbers with DUI satu- ration patrols. Red Bluff Police reportedly made a total of 28 traffic stops FOURTH OF JULY LET THERE BE LIGHT Red Bluff once again celebrates holiday with fireworks show, thanks to residents PHOTOSBYRICHGREENE—DAILYNEWS The Tehama County Fireworks Committee's fireworks show erupts into color over Red Bluff on Friday.
