Friday, June 17, 2011 – Daily News 5A Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Los Molinos High School Alumni Association awards scholarships Special to the DN Los Molinos -- The Los Molinos High School Alumni Association honored eight very deserving and talented graduating high school seniors during an awards night held on June 7. The following students were awarded a $500 Los Molinos High School Alumni Association scholarship: Amanda Jones and Jorge Salazar. The Association administers two other scholarships that are fund- ed by the families of past alumni. The following students were awarded a $500 Warren Conklin Scholarship: Kevin Garnica, Francis Ocampo, Gaumel Murillo and Breanna Gratreaks. The following students were awarded a $500 Reed-Talcott Schol- arship: Christian Smith and Jessi Southworth. The Los Molinos High School Alumni Association is an organiza- tion that is composed of former graduates, spouses, and other com- munity members who give their time, talents and financial contribu- tions to help the school years after they have graduated and in some cases left the area. Along with awarding annual scholarships to graduating seniors, the Association allocates close to $1,000 a year to the school in dona- tions for various programs, including: sober graduation, athletics, library fund and other student related activities/services. Since 1993, the Association has given over $85,000 to the Los Molinos High School. Information about joining or supporting the Los Molinos Alumni Association is available from LMHSAA at P.O. Courtesy photo Lassen View School’s fifth graders used pencil and then pastels to draw the Statue of Liberty.The school project was sponsored by the Tehama County Arts Council and California Arts Council Arts Plate Program. The students first used pencils and a triangular grid to assist proportion. The students then used the triangular grid system and pastels.The students used both light and dark paper. Silveira named May Feature Teacher Null named June Feature Teacher Susan Silveira, a fifth grade teacher at Sacred Heart School in Red Bluff, was recently honored with the Feature Teacher award. “If you love to teach, become a teacher,” she said. Silveira was presented with the award by Larry Champion, superintendent of schools, and Tyler Smail of Edward Jones at a recent school assembly. “The Feature Teacher award is given to teachers who excel in the class- room,” Champion said. “Mrs. Silveira has joined a cadre of Tehama County’s best and brightest and we applaud her accomplish- ments.” “Susan was chosen for her creative, visual methods and her deep seated concern for each student,” said Prin- cipal Leslie Trujillo. “Mrs. Silveira is a top-notch teacher. Students excel in her classroom and she is a wonderful asset to Sacred Heart School.” Silveira, who has been teaching for 21 years, loves to teach all subjects but Courtesy photos Pictured, from left, are Tyler Smail, Susan Silveira, Leslie Trujillo and Larry Champion. especially enjoys math and writing. “I like to incorporate the arts into all aspects of the curriculum,” she said. “The students in my class create books for different subjects, including projects and other things they learn throughout the year. The books are then shared with their classmates at the end of the year. Pro- jects like this help the stu- dents to learn about taking pride in their work, and learning from others.” The Feature Teacher award is given monthly to public and private school teachers in Tehama County. The honorees are then entered into the selection pool for Teacher of the Year, which is given annually in October by the Tehama County Education Founda- tion. For more, visit www.tehamaschools.org. School holds first Teen Health Fair Jackson Heights School held its first Teen Health Fair May 24 for fifth and sixth grade students. Jeff Stover, former San Francisco 49er, was the keynote speaker and started off the day with the message of setting goals and making the right choices throughout life. After Jeff answered many questions from students, they rotated through six healthy presentations that were held in classrooms. Bidwell School teacher Annette Null was honored with the Feature Teacher award June 1 by Larry Champion, superinten- dent of schools, and Tyler Smail of Edward Jones. “This award is about teachers doing outstand- ing academic work in their classrooms,” Cham- pion said. “Annette cer- tainly is doing that here at Bidwell.” Null takes pride in see- ing her students analyze problems and work through them together. “It is especially grati- fying to hear one student genuinely encourage another,” Null said. “Growing up, I had an awesome elementary teacher in a three room school in the San Juaquin Valley – Mrs. Opal Lee Sparks. She was my first mentor and the reason I became a teacher.” Null has had many memorable moments over the years, citing inspira- tion from students having ah-ha moments, to engaged parents, other teachers, school adminis- trators and the late Don Corrie for his fast paced and fun filled math work- shops. “Mrs. Null is a gem,” said William McCoy, superintendent of Red Bluff Elememtary. “She has consistently provided outstanding instruction to our students for many years. It is nice to have the opportunity to recognize her incredible contribu- tions to student learning.” Null offers this advice to others. Carry around two things — a positive attitude and a smile. Treat others – co-workers, parents, administrators and espe- cially children – as you would like to be treated.
