The Red Bluff High School class of 1957 has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Megan Benefield who is a 2011 graduate of the Edu- cational Outreach Academy. The Academy is a division of Red Bluff High School where Benefield took most of her classes. The scholarship was given in memory of Barbara Moore who was the RBUHS Class of 1957 reunion chairwoman for many years. Members of the class of 1957 say that she was the glue that kept the class together. Benefield, 18, plans to attend Shasta College where she will have a double major in communi- cations and music. She enjoys singing country music and taught herself to play the guitar when she was 12. While attending high school, she was class president both her fresh- man and sophomore years. She was active in dance, drama, choir and X Factor which is a school spirit group. She was a mentor at Bidwell School. She works at the front desk of a local Fitness center. Benefield says it is a honor to receive the Class of '57 Scholarship and she will put it to good use. Her grandfather is Bob Bene- field, a member of the class of 1957. Local youth to attend special camp Through a combined effort by Shasta and Tehama counties commu- nity organizations to honor children with seri- ous illnesses, children from Porterville, Apple Valley and Red Bluff will attend a special camp addressing their needs. All of these children have been diagnosed with serious illnesses. They have little in their lives to laugh at and enjoy. The camp is intended to give them relief from daily medical trauma and to gain the support system needed to assist them along the way. They will meet other children and families in similar situa- tions. Sixteen selected fami- lies of the Walmart Heart Program children were invited to come to the camp, which starts at 2 p.m. today. They will stay until Sunday, June 19. A total of 87 family members will attend the camp, thanks to the Shas- ta County School District, Whiskeytown National Park Services, California Department of Fish and Game and local business- es for donations. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and other medical personnel and the Walmart Missing In America Project volun- teers who will attend and assist with activities. Band to be featured during River Festival June 25. The Red Bluff River Park Festival is slated to be an event to be remembered by all those in attendance. It seems that everyone involved is focused on the prize, which is, keeping McGlynn Pool open through the summer for area youth.
