SACRAMENTO ManyCal- ifornians and visitors will be celebrating our nation's independence this July 4th holiday with fireworks but Cal Fire urges extreme caution during California's drought emergency. It can take hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to control a large wildfire. Effective July 1, Cal Fire Chief Ken Pim- lott ordered a ban on open burning throughout the 31 million acres of state responsibility area protected by Cal Fire due to the elevated threat of wildfire caused by the drought emergency. "The drought has in- creased the threat of wildfire in California," said Pimlott. "We are urging the public to cel- ebrate our nation's inde- pendence by attending a professional fireworks display. For those who choose to use fireworks to celebrate, make sure fireworks are allowed in the area of use and fol- low all safety precau- tions. You don't want to ruin your celebration by becoming financially re- sponsible for a fire caused by your activities." California has a zero tolerance for the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Illegal fireworks include sky rockets, bottle rock- ets, roman candles, aer- ial shells, firecrackers and other types that ex- plode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable man- ner. It is illegal to sell, transport, or use fire- works that do not carry the "Safe and Sane" seal, as well as possess or use any fireworks in a com- munity where they are not permitted. Cal Fire is asking the public to take the follow- ing precautions: • First check that fire- works are allowed in the area of use • Make sure the fire- work has the State Fire Marshal "Safe and Sane" seal • Purchase only from legitimate organizations authorized to sell • Have a bucket of wa- ter, sand or garden hose available at firing site • Read all instructions before use • Never alter, modify or enhance fireworks — use only in the manner intended • Make sure fireworks have proper clearance from flammable materi- als including dry grass and brush FIRE SAFETY Cautionurgedduring drought conditions Beforeacrowdofathletes, volunteers and sports fans, Sen. Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber, put the ceremonial first shot Wednesday to open the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the State Capitol. "Thanks to the ingenuity of the Sacramento Sports Commission, the Capitol Shot is an extraordinary venue to promote Track & Field sports competition," Nielsen said. The concrete ring and the landing area were built by students in California State University, Sacramento's engineering department to meet all national and international specifications. Having starred on the Track & Field team while attending California State University, Fresno, Nielsen continues to promote the importance of sports participation. Wednesday's Capitol Shot kicked off the 2014 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held at California State University, Sacramento's Hornet Stadium. The remainder of the competition began Thurs- day and will continue through Sunday at Hor- net Stadium. Tickets are available for purchase at sacsports.com. "Track & Field encour- ages both individuality and teamwork; it is an in- dividual sport where one athlete's score contributes to the teams' overall suc- cess," Nielsen said.
