STRONGMAN Special to the DN Tehama County’s strongest compet- ed, Saturday, in a one of a kind compe- tition of strength, power, and athleti- cism at the first annual Bob’s Tire Games sponsored by Tehama Family Fitness Center. This was an event to be remem- bered. The Games consisted of youth tire flipping, lightweight and heavy- weight strongman competition with all implements incorporating tires as weights and a 1,000-pound tire flip for a $100 prize provided by Bob’s Tires. Tehama Family Fitness Center General Manager Troy Lalaguna and Lance Nance of Bob’s Tires wanted to create a fun and challenging event that combined Strongman and tires. “Tire flipping is a common strong- man event so we figured lets make all the events relate to tires,” Lalaguna said. The strongman events were a giant tire flip, tire pull, tire dead lift on an actual jeep axle, and a tire throw. With wet weather and heavy awk- ward implements, the Games were a true test of guts and perseverance. Next year Bob’s Tires and Tehama Family Fitness plan to grow the event by adding more sport competitions like archery and arm wrestling. Event coordinators wanted to thank all the competitors, sponsors, and spec- tators that supported the inaugural year. Jones had three hits for the Orioles, who will try to com- plete a three-game sweep Wednesday night. Baltimore had lost eight straight series to Oakland since July 2007. Hardy and Scott connected against Guillermo Moscoso (2-2), and Jones made it 3-0 in the sixth with a drive off Michael Wuertz. Mark Reynolds added an RBI double in the seventh against Craig Breslow. Oakland’s skid is its longest since an eight-game slide from Sept. 27, 2009, to April 5, 2010. The A’s are 5-15 since May 17. Making his major league debut, Oakland second base- man Jemile Weeks went 0 for 4 in the leadoff spot. Weeks, the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft, had his contract pur- chased from Triple-A Sacramento before the game. He is the younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks. Jakubauskas (1-0) came into the game with a 6.39 ERA over five appearances, all in relief. He was pressed into duty because the Orioles are carrying only four starters and were playing for a fifth straight day. It was Jakubauskas’ first start since April 24, 2010, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In that game, the right-hander was struck in the head by a liner off the bat of Lance Berkman in the first inning and carted off the field. This time, Jakubauskas had a two-hit shutout in the fifth inning when Cliff Pennington smacked a line drive that hit the pitcher on his left ankle. After consulting with trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck Showalter, Jakubauskas took a few warmup tosses and finished his outing by retiring Weeks for the third out. Clay Rapada retired two batters in the sixth, Jeremy Accardo worked 2 1-3 innings and Koji Uehara got the final three outs to complete the five-hitter. VOLLEYBALL CAMP The Mercy High Volleyball Clinic will be held July 18- Ailing Nowitzki lifts Mavericks, NBA finals tied DALLAS (AP) — Dirk Now- itzki and the Dallas Mavericks have pulled off another stunning comeback, tying the NBA finals at two games each. And this time, Nowitzki did it while battling the flu. Nowitzki shook off three poor quarters to score 10 of his 21 points in the final period as the Mavericks outscored the Miami Heat 21-9 over the final 10:12 for an 86-83 victory in a memorable Game 4 Tuesday night. The Mavs avoided going down 3-1, a deficit no team has ever overcome in the finals, and guaran- teed the series will return to Miami for a Game 6 on Sunday night. ‘‘We just played with incredible heart and passion,’’ Dallas center Tyson Chandler said. Dwyane Wade scored 32 points, but fumbled an inbounds pass with 6.7 seconds left. He knocked the ball back to Mike Miller for a potential tying 3-point- er, but it wasn’t even close to hit- ting the rim. Chris Bosh scored 24 points for Miami, but the Heat got a stunningly unproductive game from their biggest star, LeBron James. He scored only eight points, making just 3 of 11 shots. He contributed nine rebounds and seven assists, but his lack of scor- ing sticks out because of the loss. Nowitzki opened the game looking just fine, making his first three shots. But then he missed 10 of 11, and missed a free throw for the first time since Game 4 of the conference finals. By then, word spread of his illness. With the game — and likely the series — on the line, Nowitzki found a way to come through. He made only 2 of 6 shots, but that included a terrific layup with 14.4 seconds left; he made all six of his free throws. Hey, if he could win Game 2 with a left-handed layup two days after tearing a tendon in the tip of his middle finger, what’s a little temperature? Miami was poised to take a commanding lead in the series when Udonis Haslem hit a jumper that made it 74-65 early in the fourth quarter. The way Nowitzki was playing, the Mavericks didn’t seem capable of pulling off anoth- er rally like Game 2. Yet Jason Terry made consecu- tive baskets, and the surge was on. Terry ended up capping it with two free throws with 6.7 seconds left. Championships State Baltimore 4 Athletics 0 TIED Miami 83 Dallas 86 2-2
