Villarreal HONORROLL RBUHS spring semester honor roll By Ben Nuckols The Associated Press WASHINGTON The Dis- trict of Columbia public school system, one of the first districts in the coun- try to evaluate teachers us- ing student test scores, an- nounced Thursday that it would suspend the prac- tice while students adjust to new tests based on Com- mon Core standards. Chancellor Kaya Hen- derson announced the de- cision, saying officials are concerned it wouldn't be fair to use the new tests un- til a baseline is established and any complications are worked out. The District has fired hundreds of teachers un- der the system, which was put in place by Henderson's predecessor, Michelle Rhee. Test scores make up 35 per- cent of evaluations for those who teach students in the tested grades and subjects. Last week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Founda- tion joined the two larg- est teachers' unions in call- ing for a temporary halt to evaluating teachers based on Common Core tests. The foundation has spent more than $200 million imple- menting the Common Core standards nationwide. The U.S. Education De- partment has not backed the idea of a moratorium, which is also being considered in New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo introduced a bill on Thursday that would remove test scores from teacher evaluations for two years, and a handful of states have delayed using test scores to make personnel decisions. But no state that already in- cludes test scores in eval- uations has committed to pausing the practice. "Although we applaud District of Columbia Pub- lic Schools (DCPS) for their continued commitment to rigorous evaluation and support for their teachers, we know there are many who looked to DCPS as a pacesetter who will be dis- appointed with their desire to slow down," Raymonde Charles, an Education De- partment spokeswoman, said in an emailed state- ment. President Barack Obama's administration has offered incentives to states to de- velop more meaningful teacher evaluation systems and to adopt college- and ca- reer-ready standards such as Common Core. EDUCATION DC t o su sp en d te st s co re s in teacher evaluations The Associated Press NEW YORK Corinthian Colleges, a for-profit ed- ucation company with about 75,000 students na- tionwide, warned Thurs- day that it may fail as it clashes with U.S. regula- tors over student data. Corinthian, which owns the Everest College, Heald College and WyoTech schools, said that the U.S. Department of Education has limited its access to federal funds after it failed to provide documents and other information to the agency. That follows allega- tions that the company al- tered grades, student at- tendance records and fal- sified job placement data used in advertisements for its schools. Shares in the company plunged more than 64 per- cent Thursday. The Education Depart- ment said that it height- ened its oversight of the company after requesting data "multiple times" over the past five months. Regu- lators have grown increas- ingly concerned about in- consistencies in its job placement claims for grad- uates. Corinthian's problems come as student enroll- ment at schools run by for-profit education com- panies have been drop- ping amid heightened gov- ernment scrutiny of the in- dustry's practices. Earlier this year, the Consumer Financial Protection Bu- reau filed suit against an- other company, ITT Educa- tional Services Inc., alleg- ing that it pushed students into high-cost private loans knowing they would likely default. The company de- nied the charges. Several state attorneys general are also investigating various for-profit education com- panies. At Corinthian, the Ed- ucation Department has now limited the federal student aid funds avail- able to the school and is re- leasing those funds only 21 days after Corinthian sub- mits student enrollment data, according to a Secu- rities and Exchange Com- mission filing. Those funds are avail- able in most cases within one to three days. The Santa Ana, Califor- nia, company said that it has sought, but has been refused, additional financ- ing by its lenders. It's unclear what would happen to its students. It has more than 100 cam- puses in the U.S. and Canada as well as on- line classes. Everest and Heald offer programs in the health care, business and computer technology fields. WyoTech trains stu- dents on motorcycle re- pair, automotive technol- ogy and air conditioner in- stallation.
