LocaloperastarSydney Mancasola will perform at the Cascade Theatre in a benefit concert for Mercy Foundation North. Pro- ceeds from the evening will be directed to the commu- nity services of Shasta Se- nior Nutrition Programs and Golden Umbrella. Mancasola recently won the prestigious Metropoli- tan Opera National Council Auditions, often referred to as the "American Idol of the opera." She is a third-year resident artist for the Acad- emy of Vocal Arts in Phila- delphia and earned a bache- lor's degree from the Ober- lin Conservatory of Music. For her May perfor- mance with the North State Symphony, Mancasola will demonstrate her wide- ranging abilities with a pro- gram of opera, light opera, sacred and popular songs, including Mozart's "Exul- tate Jubilate" and "Over the Rainbow." "Mercy Foundation North is as gratified as we are excited to have Sydney bring her award-winning opera talents to Redding to benefit senior citizens in her own hometown," says foundation president and family friend, Maggie Red- mon. Mercy Foundation North is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the works of the Sisters of Mercy in Tehama, Siskiyou and Shasta counties, which include Shasta Senior Nu- trition Programs, Golden Umbrella, Mercy Medical Center Redding, St. Eliza- beth Community Hospital and Mercy Medical Center Mt. CONCERT Lo ca l op er a st ar to perform at Cascade Theatre REDDING Lake Shasta Cavern's will be hosting a party Friday to celebrate 50 years of hosting under- ground tours. Guests on Friday will re- ceive free grilled hot dogs, drinks and ice cream. Jetovation will be there putting on Jetovator dem- onstrations and tickets for the Caverns tour are half off all day with tours every half hour. Several marinas around Shasta Lake will have houseboats open for tours as well. Matt Doyle, general manager of the Caverns said, "We wanted to use our 50th anniversary as a time to thank the community for supporting this Natu- ral National Monument, so we'd really like everyone to come out and just have a good time Friday and cele- brate with us." From I-5 take the Obrien exit to Shasta Caverns Road and follow the signs. Lake Shasta Caverns opened its doors for guided tours on May 30, 1964 and has become a popular area attraction in Northern Cal- ifornia. In 2012 the Caverns were designated as a Na- tional Natural Landmark by the National Park Ser- vice. Tours feature a catama- ran cruise across the lake, a comfortable bus ride to the cave entrance and a guided tour of the caves. Visitors can view fascinating rock formations from the com- fort and safety of lighted walkways with handrails. TO DO Lake Shasta Caverns celebrates 50th anniversary The fourth annual Te- hama Trail Passport Week- end will offer an agricultural tour across Tehama County, but you don't necessarily have to drive yourself. The Tehama Trail shut- tle service departs at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8, from the Tehama Country Visitor Center on Antelope Boulevard in Red Bluff, and returns at 5 p.m. A tour guide will fill you in on local agricultural his- tory while you kick back and enjoy sweeping views of vineyards, olive groves, walnut orchards, oak wood- lands and wide-open spaces. Along the route you'll have a chance to meet the farmers who grow your food, browse art and other hand-crafted items, and you'll sample fresh veggies, fruits, a va- riety of nuts, artisan olive oils and vinegars, grass-fed meats and fine wines. The Passport Weekend shuttle itinerary for Satur- day includes stops at Julia's Fruit Stand, Burlison's Fruit Stand, Bianchi Orchards Walnuts & Wine, Country Haven at the Red Barn, New Clairvaux Vineyard, Lucero Olive Oil and the Olive Pit. Sunday's shuttle route in- cludes Tehama Oaks Vine- yard & Winery, Enjoy the Store, Indian Peak Vine- yards, Alger Vineyards, Mt. Tehama Winery, Cedar Crest Vineyards and Shasta Daisy Vineyards. All tickets, which cost $20 each, include free sam- pling at each location and a tote bag. Guided tour tick- ets are available on a first- come, first-served basis for $60 each. The event is a concert and fundraiser supporting local music and arts edu- cation. It is sponsored by the Manton Music and Arts Council, a non-profit orga- nization that offers no cost violin, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and vocal lessons to area students. PassportWeekend Bluegrass on the Moun- tain will take place during the fourth annual Tehama Trail Passport Weekend, a two-day agricultural tour across Tehama County. The event gives visitors two ways to celebrate com- munity. They'll have a chance to hear some great bluegrass music performed by local students while sampling wines made right here in Manton. With a Passport Weekend ticket, guests will get free admission to the bluegrass festival, a $10 value. Sunday On Sunday, the Passport Weekend fun continues with tours of the vineyard and winemaking facility and a barrel tasting. Passport Weekend tick- ets can be purchased at En- joy the Store and Tehama Country Visitor Center. Passports include general admission to Bluegrass on the Mountain.
