BENMARGOT—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS United States soccer team members Chris Wondolowski (le ), who is a former Chico State standout, and Michael Parkhurst arrive at U.S. practice Thursday in Stanford in preparation for the World Cup soccer tournament. Staff, wirereports STANFORD Chris Won- dolowski, a former Chico State University soccer standout, earned a spot on the final 23-man United States roster for this sum- mer's World Cup — but that wasn't the biggest surprise of the day. Wondolowski, who now is a standout scorer for the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer, is one of four forwards on the team an- nounced by U.S. coach Jur- gen Klinsmann. He made the squad at the expense of Landon Donovan, the Amer- ican career scoring leader who was among seven play- ers cut Thursday, well before the June 2 deadline. Donovan, bidding to make his fourth World Cup at 32, was bypassed by Klinsmann in favor of Aron Johanns- son and Wondolowski, who joined Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey as the for- wards. Wondolowski, 31, who grew up in the East Bay be- fore coming to Chico State, will be playing on his first World Cup team when the United States opens the tournament June 16 against Ghana in Brazil. He was con- sidered a longshot a year ago but has scored nine goals in his past 10 appearances for the United States, continu- ing the goal-scoring prow- ess he has shown in MLS. "It's an exciting moment when you have narrowed the roster down as a coach- ing staff, and these 23 play- ers that you've chosen can focus now purely on Brazil," Klinsmann said in a state- ment. "We can go into more specific things about techni- cal approaches and about the opponents. "For the players, it's very important to know that they are now part of it and they can relax and know they are on the list going to Brazil and taking it from there. After almost 10 days of work right now, we thought the point has come to make the deci- sion." Also cut were defenders Brad Evans, Clarence Good- son and Michael Parkhurst, midfielders Joe Corona and Maurice Edu, and forward Terrence Boyd. Donovan has 57 goals in 156 international appear- ances and has been the face of American soccer for the past decade, both with the national team and with Ma- jor League Soccer, where he has won five titles. Donovan was a main- stay of the national team before he took a sabbatical of about four months after the 2012 season, spending part of the time in Cambo- dia. Klinsmann said Dono- van would have to earn his spot back. Chico's Wondolowski gets spot on World Cup roster Ex-Chico State player one of four forwards on 23-man team U.S. SOCCER Staff, Wire Reports Former Chico State Uni- versity football coach Mike Bellotti has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Bellotti was the football coach at Chico State from 1984 to 1988, then went on to a stellar coaching career at the University of Oregon from 1995 to 2008. Chico State dropped its football program in 1997. At Chico State and Ore- gon combined, Bellotti had a record of 137 wins, 80 losses and two ties. In five seasons at the helm, Bellotti led the Wildcats to a 23-25-2 re- cord, including a 7-3 mark and a national top 10 rank- ing in 1986. The Sacramento native guided the 'Cats to back-to-back winning sea- sons in 1985-86 for the first time since 1970-71. In 1986, was named the Northern California Athletic Confer- ence coach of the year. At Oregon, he became the first head coach in school history to post a winning record in each of his first nine seasons. He guided the Ducks to 12 bowl games in 14 seasons. His best season was 2001, when Oregon won the Fiesta Bowl and claimed the No. 2 national ranking. Bellotti boasted more overall (116) and conference (72) wins than any other Pac-10 coach during his 14- year tenure and remains the winningest coach in Oregon football history. He left the coaching ranks for a brief stint as Oregon's athletics director before moving on to serve as a college foot- ball analyst for ESPN. Bellotti was one of two coaches elected to the Hall of Fame, it was announced Thursday. The other is Jerry Moore, who coached at North Texas, Texas Tech and Appalachian State. LaDainian Tomlinson, Derrick Thomas, Sterling Sharpe and Tony Boselli led the list of players elected to the hall. The new Hall of Fame classwasannouncedThurs- day by the National Football Foundation at a news con- ference in Dallas. The rest of the players who will be inducted during the National Football Foun- dation's awards banquet in December are: Louisiana Tech tackle Willie Roaf, Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton, North Car- olina cornerback Dre Bly; Purdue defensive tackle Dave Butz; Penn State linebacker Shane Conlan; Maine linebacker John Huard; Stanford running back Darrin Nelson; UCLA quarterback John Sciarra; McNeese State defensive back Leonard Smith; and Mississippi tight end Wes- ley Walls. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Former Chico State coach Bellotti elected into Hall board. But Anderson once again found a way to survive and advance. Bailey Sandifer led off the first with a single and Kinzie Pokorny was hit by a pitch. Two batters later An- derson's Greenhaw came through for the Cubs. Corning finished its sea- son 23-14. With just two seniors, Jennings and Ana Carrillo, the Lady Cardinals will look forward to next season and have strong expectations going into it. Corning FROM PAGE 1 whatever happens, hap- pens." YeonisCespedes'sacrifice flyhadgiventheA'sa2-1lead in the top of the 11th after he had tied the game with an RBI double in the ninth off Rays closer Grant Balfour. Cespedes had been 0 for 11 in the series before hitting his double. Josh Lueke (1-2) got the win after pitching the 11th for the Rays, who broke a four-game losing streak. "We needed some kind of boost," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We were foiled in our attempts, and you've got to give Oakland credit. They're playing at a very high level now." Yunel Escobar drove in the Rays' first run with a single in the seventh off Oak- land starter Sonny Gray. The Rays' final out in the ninth came when Jen- nings was caught stealing. The original call of safe was overturned by a replay chal- lenge that took 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Alex Cobb gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six in 6 2/3 in- nings in his first start for the Rays since April 12. After spending 35 games on the disabled list with a strained left oblique, the right-hander tied a fran- chise record with his third straight scoreless start. Gray pitched eight in- nings for Oakland, giving up five hits and reducing his league-leading earned run average to 1.99. "It felt like for a while there might not be any runs scored," Melvin said. "You've just got to wait out the starting pitcher and try to get to the bullpen." Oakland right fielder Josh Reddick ran into the wall to rob Wil Myers of an extra-base hit with the bases loaded and two outs in the third.
