CHRISSCHNEIDER—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS The grounds crew pulls out the tarp for the second rain delay in the sixth inning of Thursday's game between the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies in Denver. ByPatGraham TheAssociatedPress DENVER The kid wanted to keep playing even with the field a muddy mess and more rain on the horizon. Sorry, Nolan Arenado, maybe next time. The game between the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants was suspended after the second rain delay Thursday, with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. A makeup date was still being de- termined. The Giants next visit Coors Field on Sept. 1-3. When the game resumes, though, the Rockies will be at the plate with two outs and Michael Cuddyer on first after his third single. Had it been left up to Arenado, they would've found a way to finish. But that's just him. "If it looked good, I wish we would've kept playing," Arenado said. That's the thing — the weather didn't look good. Although the skies looked less om- inous, the field was saturated. The grounds crew dumped bags and bags of diamond dry on the infield just to try and make it playable. But after an 82-minute delay before the fourth and another stoppage two innings later for 84 minutes, it was a big undertaking. The commissioner's office had finally seen enough and in- formed crew chief Bill Miller to sus- pend it. "The field took a lot of water," Miller said in a statement. "It was going to take 45 minutes to get ready and an- other storm was forecast to hit. ... Both managers agreed it was best." No reason to risk injury, especially after the Giants had two pitchers strain hamstrings the day before — on a dry field, no less. "It just made sense," Giants man- ager Bruce Bochy said. "This is the smartest thing to do." Wilin Rosario tied the game at 2 when he hit into a double play in the fifth. THESCORE By Mark Didtler The Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. The Oak- land Athletics let a three-game series sweep slip away in extra in- nings. Sean Rodriguez hit a three-run home run with two out during a four-run 11th inning Thursday to lift the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics. "It's always nice to win a se- ries, but when you've won two and you're ahead, not being able to close it out is a little disappoint- ing," Oakland manager Bob Mel- vin said. "But you pick up and go on to tomorrow." The Athletics lost for only the second time in 13 games. Rodriguez's team-leading fifth homer came off Luke Gregerson after Desmond Jennings' two-out single had tied it against Dan Otero (4-1). "I don't really think you're think- ing about what the outcome is go- ing to be," Rodriguez said. The Cubs won the road trip to Susanville to earn the semifinal showdown with Northern Athletic League rival Corning. Anderson wasted no time Thursday, scoring in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Cardinals struck back in the bottom half after Bailey Jen- nings led off with a single. She moved over on a Kaitlin Cox sacrifice and stole third base before coming home on a Baylie Fryar bunt to even the score. It stayed that way until the fifth inning as Pokorny and Corning's Cheyenne Boles kept putting up ze- roes in what turned into a pitch- er's duel. In the fifth Jennings got it go- ing for Corning again with a one- out double. Two batters later she scored on Fryar's second RBI of the game and Corning held a 2-1 lead, need- ing just six more outs to reach the championship.
