Thursday, May 12, 2011 – Daily News – 5A FEATURES Cold hands plague reader DEAR DR. GOTT: I have lost 40 pounds in four months. I’m on a 1,800-calories-a- day diet and exer- cise almost daily. My doctor pre- scribed Adipex-P daily to help me with my weight loss and Arthrotec for my arthritis. These are the only new medica- tions I am taking. I’m a 69- year-old female. Since I began losing the weight, my hands have been unusually cold. It feels as if I have them in ice water. Is this something I should ask my doctor about, or is it nor- mal? DEAR READER: Adipex-P is an appetite sup- pressant for the treatment of obesity. Side effects can include constipation, diar- rhea, difficulty sleeping, headache, nervousness, rest- lessness, upset stomach, chest pain, shortness of breath and more. Arthrotec is a nons- teroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces pain and inflammation. Side effects can include headache, nau- sea, stomach pain, stomach ulcers, chest pain, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and more. Your arthritis may certainly have a bearing on your cold hands. There is a slight possi- bility one of the new med- ications or a combination of others you might be on are causing your cold hands. Do you have Raynaud’s syndrome, a thyroid condi- tion, anemia, a B12 defi- ciency or are you under stress? Any of these situa- tions and many others could be the culprit. Ask your doctor whether any other medications you are taking could be affecting you, or whether he or she can order blood work that might shed some light on your problem. Without knowing your full medical history and the other med- ications you are on, it is impossible for me to deter- mine why your hands have become so cold so quickly, but as I pointed out, there are many possible reasons. Dr. Peter Gott In the interim, when you sit watching television or walk down the street every day, curl your hands up tightly into fists. Open the fists and stretch your fingers as wide as possible. Repeat the pattern, and do it several times a day. Incorporate arm exercises by swinging them forward and back. Get your circulation moving, eat a healthful, balanced diet, and discontinue tobacco imme- diately if you are a smoker, and you might find the relief you are seeking. DEAR DR. GOTT: Is there any hope for me to restore muscle mass? I have taken a statin for 20 years and am now on simvastatin. Other necessary meds I take are for COPD. I was born in 1938 and am not yet frail, but fearful. I am active and exercise at a fitness center. DEAR READER: The aging process and a progres- sive loss of muscle mass often go hand in hand. Age- related changes in muscle- protein synthesis might be the result of dietary modifi- cations and reduced exercise programs. In fact, several studies indicate that protein intake decreases in some older, frail people, as well as in those that are quite healthy, but there are steps a person can take to combat the process. The most healthful method of improving mus- cle mass is through a proper diet and gradual, moderate exercise, specifically strength training. Speak with your physician regard- ing what you are capable of incorporating on a daily basis. Or request a referral to your hospital’s physical- therapy department. After a few sessions, you should be able to take over any exer- cise program on your own at home. Good luck. Ford wants mothers-to- be to buckle up properly Ford is providing safety tips for mothers-to-be as May begins the seasonal uptick in birth rates through early fall, according to Center for Disease Control data. Ford wants to help address the more than 170,000 car crashes involving pregnant woman every year just as a growing wave of expectant mothers start struggling to fit comfortably – and above all, safely – into their cars. Ford researchers plan to gather further insight on mother-to-be and fetal crash safety through a state-of- the-art virtual pregnant crash test dummy. Currently in development, the computer-generated model will be built similarly to Ford’s adult human model, which took nearly a decade to complete and validate using MRI scans and other data. The computerized preg- nant crash test dummy will be used to simulate how a pregnant woman and her fetus are impacted in colli- sions of different speeds, to help design safety enhancements. In the meantime, Ford is launching a new effort to continue emphasizing proper seat belt usage– the No. 1 life-saving device for all vehicle occupants. Owner’s manuals for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles print- ed since 2010 include an explanation and graphic illus- tration for how pregnant women should wear seat belts. And with the pregnancy-heavy months of summer around the corner, Ford wants to make sure every expectant mother knows how to correctly buckle up. Remove bulky clothes so the seat belt can be placed as close to the body as possible If you are the driver, adjust the seat so you can reach the pedals comfortably with as much distance as possi- ble between your belly and the steering wheel Pull the lap belt over your thighs, buckle it and pull tight. Make sure the lap belt does not run across the belly, but lies as flat as possible under the curve Position the shoulder belt across your chest, between the breasts and to the side of the belly; pull tight Never tuck the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back – this can hurt both you and the baby. She told me she was in love with the guy and was going to leave me. Now she says she realizes he was only using her physically and she isn’t interested in him anymore. This affair ended last winter, and they had no contact for a while. Our marriage seemed to be mending. However, about six weeks ago, my wife grew more and more distant and had no interest in being intimate. I then discovered she was texting this same man. When I confronted her, she denied she was doing anything wrong. Now if I bring it up, she becomes angry and refuses to dis- cuss it. I have a problem with this. I feel her continued conversations with this man are a violation of my trust. She betrayed me with this guy and claimed he was no longer a part of her life. Her justification is that she isn’t, in fact, seeing him and has no interest in resuming their affair. She says she is completely committed to me. I still am hurt by his attentions and her continued communication with him. This is becoming a very sore spot in our relationship, and I fear it may lead to a divorce. Am I wrong to feel this way? I love my wife and believe she loves me, but I find it almost impossible to trust her. Please help. — Brokenhearted Husband The end of the semester can be a stressful time on campus for everyone, but especially students. The Mindful Campus, a group at California State Univer- sity, Chico, is offering a day of meditation work- shops Friday, May 13, at Selvester’s Café, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. “Pause: Calm Your Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Broken: Your wife is still cheating. Whether or not she is seeing this man, she is still in touch with him, and that is an emotional betrayal. You are being far too accommodating. Tell her all communication with this man must stop immediately and permanently. Anything else means she values that relationship more than her marriage. And please con- sider counseling — together or on your own. Dear Annie: Our 35-year-old daughter, ‘‘Keri,’’ stole one of our credit cards and ran up a bill of nearly $30,000. She did this just after we signed for a new car for her — on which she has discontinued making payments. Keri has a good job, and we don’t understand where her money goes. My husband had to put off retiring this year in order to meet her oblig- ations. He is afraid to cut her off, because each time we get into an argument about not being paid back, Keri threatens to keep us from seeing our grandchildren. What can we do when she repeatedly promises to make good on these debts, but continues to fail? — Heartbroken Couple in Indiana Dear Indiana: Keri uses the grandchildren as leverage because it works. Unless you want this situa- tion to continue forever, you must be willing to call her bluff. (You might remind her that she stole your credit card and you can report her to Centering Prayer Group Centering Prayer (Christian, i.e., Catholic & Protestant) 3:00-3:50 Victoria Tooker Ananda Chico Medita- tion Center Mantra-based medita- tion, readings, chanting and healing prayers Body, Clear Your Mind” will bring seven different leaders of various types of meditation to the campus to offer 50-minute sessions throughout the day. The sessions are free and open to the on-campus commu- nity and the public. “Meditative practices have been used by people for millennia to focus their attention and center them- selves,” said Peggy DuFon of The Mindful Campus. “In doing so, the body nat- urally calms down and the mind clears.” Meditative and contem- plative practices have roots in all the world religions as well as in indigenous spiri- tuality. “In recent years, meditation has also become secularized; that is, it is practiced without any reference to religious beliefs. Keri could benefit from talking to a credit counselor (nfcc.org), who will help her set up a budget she can live with. We also recommend Debtors Anonymous (debtorsanonymous.org). After all, you will not always be around to bail her out, and it’s time she learned that (to avoid bail her out/figure it out). Dear Annie: This is in response to ‘‘Tired of it All,’’ whose husband developed erectile dysfunction about 15 years ago and stopped wanting sex. I could have written that letter. My husband didn’t want to touch me or have sex. We also tried hor- mone testing. Well, it turns out that there was nothing wrong with his hormones and he had been having lots of sex — it was just with men. For years, I believed I was some- how at fault. I never knew why he didn’t want me. Now it all makes sense, but he did a lot of emotional damage along the way. I found help through the Straight Spouse Net- work (straightspouse.org). ‘‘Tired’’ should look into the possibility that her husband is gay. — No Name, City or State Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
