I can tell you that a product name containing "petro" belongs at the gas station, not used to clean your home. I want to share with you a list of squeaky-clean, toxin-free cleaning tips us - ing the three items likely found in your kitchen at this moment — baking soda, white vinegar and lemons. Clean up the coffee maker by running a cy - cle using white vinegar in place of water. The vine- gar will break up mineral build-up and deodorize the machine at the same time. Be sure to rinse out ev - ery trace of vinegar before brewing up your next pot, by running plain water through it a few times. Vacuum up pet dander and odor. If you have pets, you have no idea what is lurking in your carpeting. We're talking dander and hairballs, and other things not so lovely. Do this: Sprinkle a little baking soda across your carpet and wait 15 minutes while it works its magic. Next, vacuum the areas where you've sprinkled the bak - ing soda. You'll be shocked and amazed at how much more pet dander is pulled out of the carpet and how fresh your home smells af - terward. You'll want to do this vacuuming trick of- ten. Wash out the washing machine. Get rid of the musty smell in your washing ma- chine by using white vinegar to a load of wash. It will pull that stinky smell right out. Vinegar also acts as a won - derful and completely nat- ural fabric softener. Deodorize the disposal. If your stinky disposal is setting off odor alarms in your kitchen, toss a hand - ful or two of ice down the disposal, throw in a couple of lemon wedges and turn it on. The ice chunks will clear out any gunk hang - ing around and the lemon will deodorize and clean. Nuke the microwave. Deodorize and clean your microwave with noth - ing more than two table- spoons of baking soda and a cup of water. Combine the two in a bowl, micro- wave for 3 minutes on full power. Remove the bowl (it will be hot, so be care- ful!) and wipe out the inte- rior. Done. Clean. Clean the toilet. Toss a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl. Let it soak for an hour. Next add one cup of white vinegar. Wait 10 more minutes. Flush. Toilet clean with - out scrubbing! Use a toi- let brush for an occasional scrub of the spots under the rim. Changes provide addi- tional regulatory flexibil- ity to small fleets, lower use vehicles and fleets in rural areas that have made sub- stantial progress towards cleaner air. Fleets that have invested in cleaner, compli- ant equipment and trucks will be able to use credits longer and any vehicles ret- rofit by 2014 do not have to be replaced until 2023. "We recognize the enor- mous investments that many businesses have al- ready made to ... abide by the terms of the regulation," said ARB Chairman Mary Nich- ols, "but we are also aware, particularly for many rural areas of the state, economic recovery has been painfully slow and funding for im - provements scarce." Nichols said the amend- ments, while potentially de- laying compliance for some, still protect air quality, pre- serving 93 percent of the oxides of nitrogen and die- sel particulate matter bene- fits of the original regulation. Amendments include a longer phase-in period for diesel PM requirements for trucks that operate exclu - sively in certain rural areas with cleaner air; additional time and incentive fund- ing opportunities for small fleets; a new compliance op- tion for owners who cannot currently afford compliance; expansion of the low-use ex- emption and the construc- tion truck extension. air quality Boardadoptschangestotruck, busregulations Trips to the Mission De Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Aquarium will be part of an educational field trip the sixth and seventh grade students from the Sacra - mento River Discovery Charter School will be tak- ing on May 5-9. To raise money for the trip the students offered their cleaning services to businesses. The Gold Exchange took them up on their of - fer and for 1 ½ hours stu- dents worked diligently to do spring cleaning inside and out. They scrubbed, dusted and polished the store until it fairly shined, then swept and did the windows on the entire block.
