BASEBALL By NICK WILSON MediaNews Group CHICO — Getting progressively stronger as the game wore on, Pleasant Valley High pitcher Ryan Dufort car- ried a shutout through his six innings of service before Eli Stanley took the mound in the seventh to secure a 7-0 win over Red Bluff on Tuesday at Doryland Field. Pleasant Valley (20-4, 11-0) clinched a share of the Eastern Athlet- ic League- North title with the win. Despite the loss the Spartans (20-5, 7-2) still control their destiny in the EAL-North with two weeks to play in the regular season and second place Lassen (6-3) still has to face the Vikings as well. “The kids played well,” Red Bluff coach Joe Gallaty said. “I really like this club, we have a good team.” Dufort gave up just two hits — both coming in the first inning — before going on to record four strikeouts for the win. Behind Dufort and Stanley, the Vikings played impressive defense, with center fielder Brandon Coborn making a diving catch to rob Modesto Ramirez of a base hit in the fourth, and shortstop Matt Henderson tracking down a hard grounder and making a cross-body throw to first for an out in The game was close initially, but the Vikings earned an edge in the bot- tom of the second, when Henderson hit a slow dribbler for an infield base hit that brought Cory Louber in from third. Pleasant Valley took full control in the fourth with a three-run rally that was the result of a Louber single, a Ryan Souza single and a Zeke Colby sacrifice fly. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings put up three more runs to put the game away. One of the key hits in the sixth came from Robbie Barker, who roped a two-RBI double to the left-center field By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Just as soon as their bats had brought them back into the game, their gloves let them down. The Bulldogs fell 14-2 to East Nicolaus, Tuesday, as a disastrous fifth inning undid a comeback attempt. The game was called after five innings. Los Molinos had trailed 4-0 early, but scratched back a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Graham Wagenfuhr started the rally when he was hit by a pitch. Two batters later Andrew Surtees drove in Wagenfuhr with an RBI single after Wagenfuhr had stolen second base. A.J.
