SENIOR CORNER The 50/50 Rule Part 2 by MARTHA OWEN & SUSAN GUY In Up & Coming Weekly distributed the week of March 16-22, 2011 we started a series titled The 50-50 Rule. This program was designed by Home Instead Senior Care to help siblings provide care for their aging parents without conflict. For the next several weeks we will provide some additional information that may assist in the process. Checklist for Sibling Family Caregivers The following check- list can help siblings better manage the care of their senior loved ones. Assign • List the tasks for which those in your family will be responsible. Keep the list flexible for the changing needs of your senior as well as the demands on your siblings. You’ll need a plan and overseer if your contracting outside services. __ Meals __ Housekeeping __ Scheduling doctor appointments __ Transporting to doctor appointments __ Grocery shopping __ Companionship/Outings Follow up • Plan regular times to stay in touch with your siblings to avoid miscommu- nication and misunderstanding. __ Make sure no one is doing too much. If you are the primary caregiver, ask for help if you need it. If you are a long-distance caregiver, ask for ways to help the primary caregiver.
