It is a time to relax, unwind and enjoy all of the events that downtown Fayetteville has to offer. 4th Friday runs from 6 - 10 p.m., and there is plenty to see and do. At Headquarters Library on Maiden Lane there are more than books to entertain visitors. The Red Herring Puppets will perform The Big Dipper, which uses facts and legends to explain the stars and constellations. The Chinese legend of K'uei, the Underground Railroad, the Greek legend of Callisto and the Micmac Indian legend of the Sky Bear are all part of the show. More than two dozen marionettes are used in the performance. It starts at 7 p.m. in the Pate Room. Other events this 4th Friday include a new exhibit at Cape Fear Studios. This month the studio will hold the 2014 North Carolina University faculty and staff mentor exhibit. This exhibit runs from March 28 to April 21. Enjoy the works of Charlie and Linda Riggs and a display their amazing pottery work. Along with brilliant pottery is the work of painters such as the Labadees from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. From Fayetteville State University, a piece of work from Socorra Hernandez- Hinek will be on display. Topping off this exhibit is "Nightfall at Brown Swamp," by Tony Martin. Rose Kennedy, a member of Cape Fear Studios says that these pieces will entertain the family and she hopes that they will intrigue the mind with the beauty of art. The Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum at 325 Franklin street offers a number of exhibits. The museum has displays reaching all the way from their physical building to the Market House, which features the permanent display " View from the Square." Other Transportation Museum exhibits include "Cumberland County Goes to War," which depicts a historical point of view from the county's involvement in the Civil War. Along with that is the North Carolina art pottery exhibit "Utility to Unique." This work of art depicts the use of pottery from a utilitarian means to more artful uses between the period of 1910 to 1950. There is also an exhibit about the history of the Jewish community in Cumberland County. There are artifacts of the Jewish population from the early 1880s to present time including pieces from places of worship and businesses that were started by Jewish citizens. Other participants in 4th Friday include the Downtown Alliance, Fascinate-U Children's Museum and the Arts Council, which will present the hymns, anthems and sacred music of the choir HASM. This musical organization performs for the homeless and families of military and the Fayetteville community three times a year and exists to preserve hymns, sacred music, anthems and patriotic music of all faiths for future generations. This month, they will perform at 4th Friday. Inside the Arts Council Building, don't miss the opening of the John and Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art. The exhibit will hang from March 28 - May 17. Look for vendors and live entertainment through out downtown. It is a great time to check out the locally owned businesses and restaurants operating downtown.
