On Leaders Wanted: Sign Up for Spring 2014 Citizens' Academy The City of Fayetteville wants citizens to be a part of the next Citizens' Academy in Spring 2014. Classes start Thursday, March 20 at 6 p.m. and are held each Thursday through May 8, with the exception of April 17. The Citizens' Academy is free of charge. This Citizens' Academy will be fun and interactive. The class meets once a week and gives citizens the opportunity to learn more about local government and take ownership of their community. The Citizens' Academy also helps citizens understand how the City provides services to residents. Citizens learn what City departments do and how they do it. The City hopes that informed citizens are able to take information to community groups and share with neighbors. It may even encourage some to be involved in building a better community by becoming members of boards and commissions. To apply, log onto www.cityoffayetteville.org and click on the Citizens' Academy button at the top of the page or call (910) 433-1578. City Makes Southern City Publication for Sidewalks The City recently received praise from the North Carolina League of Municipalities' Southern City newsletter. The article said that Fayetteville has made significant progress to improve walkability, installing 13 miles of sidewalk in the past five years. Engineering & Infrastructure Director Rusty Thompson is quoted in the article, which highlights Fayetteville's growth from pedestrian commuters from 1.7 to 5.4 – a number that, according to Governor Magazine, is the largest increase among the nation's large cities. Thompson, who was City Traffic Engineer before becoming Engineering & Infrastructure Director, has been vital to the addition of sidewalks in Fayetteville. He and his staff have been creative, utilizing funding from Safe Routes to School, FAST New Freedom and the N.C. Department of Transportation to install sidewalks in downtown and in neighborhoods surrounding schools. Public Invited to "IT Exposed" The City of Fayetteville Information Technology Department would like to invite the media and the community to "IT Exposed, IT doesn't happen by itself," the City's second annual technology expo. IT Exposed is sponsored by the Fayetteville IT Department and will be held in Fayetteville City Hall on Friday, March 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The use of technology has grown over the years and is deeply integrated in the daily operations of the City. The goal for this year is to "Expose" City staff and the community to the technology of today and some of the ways technology supports city services and promotes efficient operations. Some of the topics presented during IT Exposed will include GIS Story Boards, the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) student presentation and live displays of uses of IT technology in the operation of FayTV7, fire trucks, police cars and transit buses. The keynote speaker this year will be Terry Bledsoe, retired Chief Information Officer for Catawba County. Bledsoe was recently recognized by the trade journal Government Technology in their "2011 Top 25 Doer, Dreamer and Driver". THANK YOU to the following local businesses for helping us carry out our mission: Providing hope, help and healing to children, families and communities.
