Red Bluff Union High School’s Storm Lewis and Zane Medeiros signed athletic scholarships this week- end. Lewis will attend Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. His Red Bluff teammate Gerald Baker signed with the NAIA school in February. Meanwhile, Medeiros signed with Edgewood Col- lege, a NCAA Division-III school in Madison, Wisc. “For the past couple years, it’s always been kids going to Butte or Shasta and I just wanted to make a change and actually go somewhere,” Lewis said. While some things like the weather might take adjust- ments, both seniors said their recruiting visits helped them make their decision after meeting friendly staffs and peers. “It was weird being in the snow from Red Bluff and actually seeing snow stick to the ground,” Medeiros said. Lewis said Baker’s decision also helped him make his. “If I was going to go somewhere far away I wanted to go with a friend,” he said. Lewis, the son of Scott and Tonya, and Medeiros, the son of Brian and Cindy, are off to hot starts on the mound for the Spartans this season. Medeiros is 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA in 15 innings pitched. He’s struck out 12 batters and allowed 10 hits. Lewis is also 2-0 and carrying a 0.95 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched. He’s struck out 17 and allowed just six hits. The recent string of college signings has been impor- tant to Zane’s dad, Brian, who coached the Red Bluff boys when they were 13-year-olds “I’m just proud of all the hard work the boys put in and it’s paid off,” he said. For Lewis, it’s a continuation of family history. His great-grandfather Cecil Lingenfelter was a star baseball player in Red Bluff, who even spent time barn storming. “He gets his brains from his dad, but we’re pretty sure he gets his athleticism and height from the Lingenfelter blood,” Storm’s mother Tonya said. Both soon to be college ball players, have put baseball into perspective when it comes to their other dreams. “I want to go as far as I can or as far as it will take me, but if I don't make it to the next level — that’s why I want school to help,” he said. Lewis said he plans to major in pre-med. Medeiros is going for pre-pharmacy. “(I hope to) have fun for the next four years, play baseball and get a college degree while I’m there,” Medeiros said. Lady Spartans take 2 at BLD SOFTBALL Cubs Classic Despite the weather, Fri- day, the Red Bluff Lady Spartans were able to get in two of their four scheduled games at the Cubs Classic at Big League Dreams in Red- ding. Morgan Weaver came in and struck out the side in the fifth inning. Weaver also had a solid game at the dish, knocking two doubles for a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Haley Harris went 4-for- 4 with a double and two RBIs. Courtney Boes went 2- for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Brittney Fletcher went 2- for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
