Touching the lives of many people There are those who are people persons, they love to learn and share their knowledge with others. They are the curious kinds, who want to explore everything they come across in this world. Their ability to learn new things is outstanding and their willingness to share positive experi- ences bless all who cross their paths. In sharing stories and accomplish- ments with others they too are encouraged to gain information. Many of us know these adventur- ous and dedicated people. They bring joy and knowledge to those around us. One of these people was Bruce Barron. I had appreciated many of his sto- ries for several years and had visited Water Wheel Park in Manton. In recent years Bruce and wife Elna called to see if they could come by and visit with us. I said, absolutely, do come by. When they arrived we gathered in the living room and began to share stories we had writ- ten, areas we had visited and people we had known. The conversation could have continued well into the night had we each not had other obligations. Bruce brought several books of "Fabulous Memories" that he had written. He had a bookmark on page 157; the title was "Broomstick Swanson and the Rubbernecker Line." Was I a bit surprised? Yes, quite surprised since my Aunt Faye Hacker Swanson had married Leslie Howard Swanson, the son of Broomstick Swanson. Broomstick was the nickname for Robert L. Swanson who created the R.L. Swanson phone Company that ran from the Antelope area in Red Bluff through Paynes Creek to Manton via Lanes Valley. I too had written a bit about Uncle Howard and the telephone line; however Bruce had learned far more about my uncle and wanted to share his knowledge with me. with his thoughtfulness, knowing that cowboy poetry and music are two of my loves in life. Yes, Bruce Barron led a … "Truly Adventurous Life," and shared his knowledge with many, many people. The follow- ing poem excerpt describes Bruce Barron nicely; So heroes set aside their fear To lend a hand or lend Was I surprised? Yes, I can remember the time my grandmother, Garnet Hack- er had the telephone switchboard equipment in her house in Antelope Valley. She also had many discarded, old fashioned dial telephones on the property. Needless to say we, the grandchildren had the best time pre- tending that we were sending tele- phone messages everywhere. Mr. Barron’s article on the R.L. Swanson phone company brought delightful memories to me. Elna and Bruce have touched the lives of many. Our thoughtful condolences are out to Elna, thank you so much for sharing Bruce and your wonderful memories. Last year at the Cowboy Poetry Program held at the Tehama County Library, Bruce dedicated his cowboy song to me. I had the oppor- tunity to thank him; I was so touched Carolyn Barber other way. The Corning Youth Bowling Program asks for sup- port as they prepare to send the Youth Bowlers to the NorCal/USBC State Championships. For years, Java Lanes has been the only participating center that has offered a chance for 100 percent of the youth bowlers to participate in the State Champi- onships. Corning Youth Bowlers is made up of approximate- ly 100 boys and girls from Corning and surrounding communities who range in ages from 4 to 21. The bowling season runs from September through April, culminating with the State Championships as the ulti- mate bowling experience for these children. Offering this opportunity, which is a two-day event, is quite costly. In the past, hotel rooms, busing, meals, and bowling fees were paid for entirely through fundraising efforts throughout the bowling season. However, with increasing costs of transportation and lodging, the program is asking for more support and donations.
