Does life have a meaning? WE CREATE MEANING The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Christian Church, Olathe, Kan.: I talked (barely taking a breath in nine hours) to our van-driving youth minis- ter as we made the journey home from our church mis- sion trip. It was before seat belt laws, and I sat on an ice cooler crammed between the driver's seat and the pas- senger's seat in the old van. I wasn't naive or overprotected, but I'd never seen folks that poor. In south Texas I had seen an old woman eating cat food and kids growing up without running water. I've spent the past three decades on that ice cool- er, struggling for meaning, especially when life is ten- der and broken. I'm not alone. The search is universal and lifelong. You don't leave it behind with adoles- cence. After he survived Auschwitz and Dachau, Viktor Frankl wrote the profoundly powerful "Man's Search for Meaning." In a world of unimaginable brutality, Frankl witnessed starving people sharing their bread. He wrote: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing ... to choose one's attitude in any given set of cir- cumstances, to choose one's own way." We are meaning-seeking creatures. Hopefully, somewhere along the journey we figure out that mean- ing is not something we find, it's something we create. The meaning you create and the contribution you make depend on how much time you spend sitting on the cooler and how much time you spend sharing your bread. A season of preparation I love to write about the season leading up to Christmas as a time of preparation for the coming of Our Lord, but the Body of Christ has a much longer tradition of the weeks leading up to Easter being just such a prep time. It is called Lent and it is a time of great privilege for us who par- ticipate. The stereotype of Lent is that you give up something you like and so grow closer to the Son Who gave it all up to grow closer to you. Like all stereotypes there is some truth in it, but it lacks the depth and scope of the real thing. The theme of Lent is that we encrust ourselves with things we imagine compensate us for being distant from God – whether bad habits or petty indulgences. When we abandon one or more of these it is an act of repentance – of turning away from the life we create and toward the life God is creating for us – and the hope is that the turning away will be permanent. Scripture tells is that repentance is a privilege; Mark 1:1-4 expresses the call to repent in the ministry of John the Baptist as the literal beginning of the good news of the Gospel. The prin- ciple is obvious when we think of giving up something as unhealthy as – for example – smoking, but we can infer as much when we consider something less obvious, like leaving the cap off of the toothpaste for our spouse to find. It gets really good when our sacri- fice becomes a servant role we take on, like participating in a local ministry of compassion or taking a walk each night with the same spouse who will (hopefully) never again encounter a capless tube of toothpaste. Speaking of John the Baptist, he is usually the star of the show in the pre- Christmas season of Advent, and not so much during Lent. He is already dead by the time Jesus is headed toward Jerusalem for His Cross and Resurrection. Yet there is no better role model in scripture for navigating the season. John models three decisive activities that prepare us well for the new life promised in Christ; and I say decisive because they are the fruit of a repeated decision that always transcends how we feel about things at any given time. The first is that John treats Jesus like family. When his cousin approaches him for baptism – although he is con- vinced of his unworthiness to immerse the Son of God in the water of repentance – he enters the intimacy of that relationship in the river. The spirit of religion in the churches tells us that Jesus may have died for us, He does not want to hang out with us. Yet authentic faith calls us to worship in just the intimacy John demonstrates, and to make it a lifestyle choice. This holds true whether our preferred style is organ and choir or guitar and drums – with or without flags. Worship that is less than intimate – from our heart to His – is just a fulfillment of the stereo- type of giving something up for Jesus. Real worship transforms us a bit at a time into His likeness. John recognizes Messiah on that riverbank – and this too is a choice. The people we know rarely resemble Jesus in our eyes, yet Our Lord says in Matthew 25:31-40 that when we care James Wilson GodTalk for the sick, the needy, and the lonely and cast down, we do it for Him. But we only recognize Him in the retro- spect of His declaration, and that dec- laration comes only in the wake of our repeated choice to see Him beyond the function of our eyes. Yet the joy of His presence will transcend even His approv- ing words. Finally, John chooses to decrease as Jesus increas- es. One of the defining words for this season is His call to rise, take up our pal- let and walk. But it only comes to pass as we press into another, that His strength is perfected in our weakness. The more we let go and choose to trust Him, the more His miracle working power is released into our lives. It is very much like the situation in the movie, Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, when the hero’s father is mortally shot and the only way for Indy to rescue him is to step off that cliff and expect God to create a bridge to the Holy Grail. He does it, but only after Indy steps off the cliff. Have a blessed Lent. Easter is com- ing, and with it all things are new. James Wilson has been a pastor in the Anglican tradition since 1985. Students played at several different sport stations for a certain amount of time. Sport stations included football toss, soccer kicks, hippity hops, mini car- pull, target launch and agility course.
