Blustery winds combined with the cold will make it feel like it is below zero degrees Fahrenheit across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, while below-average temperatures sink into the Southeast. A bit of snow from the retreating storm will linger in New England, especially during the morning as conditions improve throughout the day. Areas from the Carolinas to the Gulf Coast will feel chilly, despite the ample sunshine throughout the day. Chu finished in third place with zero dollars on Wednes - day's edition of the syndi- cated quiz show. He had reigned for 12 days. His to- tal winnings were $297,200. "A great run," summed up host Alex Trebek. Chu was unseated by Di - ana Peloquin of Ann Arbor, Mich., who led for the day with $15,700. Chu had struggled for much of the show when, in Final Jeopardy, he risked, and lost, his entire day's bankroll — $6,400 — on the question: "He was the last male monarch who had not previously been Prince of Wales." Only Peloquin had the cor - rect response: George VI. The 30 -year-old Chu, a resident of Broadview Heights, Ohio, has described himself on Twitter as "mad genius, comedian, actor and freelance voiceover artist." He applied a "mad ge - nius" approach to "Jeop- ardy!" brinkmanship. He ditched the time-honored practice of polishing off each category's questions one by one. Instead, he took a hop - scotch approach to his cat- egory choices, which tended to keep his opponents off-kil- ter. He also concluded that the bottom rows of the game board are most likely to con - tain the hidden Daily Dou- bles, and he played accord- ingly. Chu's strategy fueled in- dignation from "Jeopardy!" traditionalists, who con- tended that such an aggres- sive style was somehow un- sportsmanlike and exhib- ited a lack of respect for the game. Chu "rejected the unwrit- ten rule that the guy or gal with the most facts wins," said "On the Media" host Brooke Gladstone on an epi - sode of the public radio show last month, "and replaced it with the appalling idea that you can outwit your oppo - nent with the wily applica- tion of game theory." It was a style much dif- ferent from that of legend- ary know-it-all Ken Jen- nings, who a decade ago set a "Jeopardy!" record with 74 consecutive victories while winning $2.5 million. 'Mad gENius' 'Jeopardy!' champion with odd style unseated By Tom Krisher The Associated Press dETROiT » General Motors is offering free loaner cars and $500 toward a new GM vehicle to more than a mil - lion owners of compact cars that are being recalled for a deadly ignition switch de- fect. But the owners have to ask in order to get the ben- efits. The offers, disclosed in a document posted Wednes- day on the National High- way Traffic Safety Admin- istration's website, are ef- fective immediately. Owners will be able to use the loaner cars until parts arrive at dealerships to replace the faulty switches. They are expected around April 7, GM said. The $500 cash allowance offer runs through April 30. GM la st month a n - nounced the recall of 1.6 mil- lion older small cars world- wide because faulty igni- tions can shut off engines unexpectedly. If the engines shut off, drivers can lose power steering and power brakes, and the air bags may not inflate if there's a crash. GM now counts 12 people as having died in crashes linked to the problem. The company said Wednesday that one victim had been double-counted. GM is facing a Depart - ment of Justice investiga- tion, as well as investiga- tions from two congressio- nal committees and federal safety regulators over its handling of the recall. The company has admitted that it knew about the problem a decade ago. Committees in the House and Senate also want to know why the government's road safety watchdog, the National Highway Traf - fic Safety Administration, didn't take action sooner. The loaner/rebate pro- gram is part of GM's dam- age control efforts. Last week, CEO Mary Barra promised that an inter- nal review would bring im- provements and prevent similar problems in the fu- ture. She also said current management is intent on "taking great care of our customers and showing that it really is a new day at GM." On Feb. 13, GM an - nounced the recall of more than 780,000 Cobalts and Pontiac G5s (model years 2005 -2007). Two weeks later it added 842,000 Sat - urn Ion compacts (2003- 2007), and Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars (2006-2007). In a document released Wednesday night, GM tried to explain why the Ion, HHR, Solstice and Sky weren't in - cluded in the Feb. 13 recall, even though they have the same ignition switches as the Cobalt and G5. Engineers examining the four models in 2011 inexplicably did not look at crash data for the 2004 Ion. But early this year, another inquiry found four crashes involving 2004 Ions in which four people were killed. Air bags did not inflate. The document says GM employees were told of most of these crashes within two weeks of when they oc - curred. GM spokesman Greg Martin said he could not comment on why the 2004 Ion crashes were excluded from the 2011 inquiry. He said GM decided to do a more in-depth analysis of the four additional models after the Cobalt and G5 re - call. The exclusion of the fatal crashes almost certainly will be examined by pros - ecutors and congressional committees investigating the recalls. Also Wednesday, GM told dealers that in situa - tions where an owner is con- cerned about driving their car and asks for a loaner, service managers can give them one until repair parts arrive. Dealers are also in - structed to tell owners who ask that GM isn't offering to buy back their car. But the company will offer the owners cash toward buy - ing or leasing a new Chev- rolet, Buick, GMC or Cadil- lac vehicle. 1.6 MilliON REcallEd GM to offer loaner cars, cash to small-car owners 235 So.
