Spartans snap Paradise’s win streak BOYS HOOPS the Bobcats. Paradise 52 Red Bluff 59 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Spartans finally had a final scoreboard that reflected their poten- tial, Wednesday night, as they dis- patched the visiting Paradise Bobcats 59-52. Before the game, few signs would have pointed to a Red Bluff win. The Eastern Athletic League — South leading Bobcats were riding a seven-game win streak and had already beaten Red Bluff twice this season, both times holding the Spar- tans under 30 points. What did the Spartans learn from those previous two losses? “They were good defensively and we didn’t shoot too well,” Red Bluff’s Ian Hill said. “We just had to get them on the right night.” That night came Wednesday as the Spartans opened up an early lead on Hill drilled a 3-pointer midway through the first quarter to make it 11- 4 and force a Paradise timeout in a sign of things to come. Hill would connect again from the arc in the first frame as did Taylor Blaser and Carlos Tapia and Red Bluff held a 17-8 lead after eight min- utes. It was more of the same in the sec- ond quarter as the Spartans stretched their lead to double-digits when Storm Lewis converted an and-one basket and free throw to make it 22- 12. In the third period, Lewis stepped out behind the arc and nailed consec- utive 3-pointers to put the lead at 39- 25. Red Bluff put away the game in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter when Zane Medeiros and Jonah McInnis converted easy layups after the Spartans broke the Bobcats’ full court press. With their emotions running high a Bobcat was called for a technical foul. Carlos Tapia cooly converted a pair of free throws and then the Spartans found Medeiros uncovered under the basket inbounding from the technical foul and they had a 54-33 lead. Trevor Edgecomb and Dominic Parisi connected on some 3-pointers for Paradise down the stretch to close the gap, but Tapia shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line to seal the game for the Spartans. Tapia finished with 14 points to lead Red Bluff. Lewis had 13 points and McInnis had 10 points. Hill finished with six points, Medeiros and Blaser each had five, Mitch Robison had three, Dereak Webster two and Austin Chase added valuable minutes off the bench. Paradise fell to 15-7 overall and 7- 3 in the EAL. The win pushed Red Bluff to 8-14 on the season and 4-6 in the EAL. The Spartans host Enterprise on Friday and with four league games remaining have a solid shot at finish- ing .500. “This team can even get better,” Hill said after the win. “We’re still making too turnovers.” The Cardinals got back to .500 in the NALwith a 52-48 road win at Central Valley, Tuesday. Corning lost their first three league games of the season, but have come back to win their last three. The Cardinals are 18-7 overall. East Nicolaus 53 Los Molinos 55 OT Los Molinos picked up a 55-53 overtime victory over East Nicolaus, Tuesday, to improve to 5-2 in the Mid-Valley League. Dom Ceja led the way with 21 points and Eric Blanchard added 14 points for the 12-7 Bulldogs. Reggie Points had nine points, Ryan Mekech had six, Rudy Martinez three and Gilbert Zamora two points.
