4A – Daily News – Thursday, February 10, 2011 Pastimes All interested commu- nity members are wel- come to attend a kick off orientation to introduce a new branding fundraising effort, Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the Riverside Restau- rant Banquet Room. A no host bar and appetizer menu for pur- chase will be available. The Red Bluff- DN file photo Benefit productions of Vagina Monologues A cast of North State women will present Eve Ensler’s award-winning play "The Vagina Mono- logues" in both Red Bluff and Redding this year. The Red Bluff performance is 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the State Theatre, 333 Oak St., in Red Bluff. Red- ding’s performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Old City Hall, 1313 Market St. Both performances will benefit Girls Inc. of the Northern Sacramento Valley. A nonprofit organization serving 900,000 girls in North America, Girls Inc. offers research-based programs and advocacy for girls and their communities. While many resources are avail- able to girls in Shasta, Tehama and Glenn counties, more gender-specific programs and opportunities are needed to help empower girls to reach their full poten- tial, understand, value and assert their rights. This is the third year for the Red Bluff performance, part of a 13-year-old global awareness campaign called V-Day that hopes to end violence against women and girls. "We’re hoping to reach more people this year because we’re adding a Redding performance," said Director Danna Swanenberg. "Our cast offers an act of love and support for the many women and girls who are victims of domestic abuse in our own county, and an educational experience in representing the worldwide violence against girls and women through the mono- logues in the play, words that are taken right out of their mouths and interpreted on stage." Cast members include Tina Robertson, Natalie Peterson, Beth Maxey, Lucy Tully, Melissa Mendonca, Talia Shirer, Briana Shirer, Amy Henderson, Maureen Greer, Liz Link and Veronica Carrel, all of Red Bluff; Amanda Davidson of Gerber and Jonessa Brittan and Valerie Mills of Redding. "This year’s performance is truly a show by women, for women," Swanenberg said. The play is based on a series of interviews by Ensler with women of all ages, races, professions and eco- nomic status. They were first performed 13 years ago off-Broadway by Ensler, and have since been seen all over the world, performed both by local and celebrity casts. The cast will perform some of the most popular readings, some poignant, many hilariously funny, a few showing the devastating pain of abuse, rape and intol- erance. Each monologue tells the story of one woman’s experience. The content is mature; parental guidance is suggested. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, and may be purchased at Wink Fashion and Salon, 332 Oak St., Red Bluff, or Toucan Tans Fashions and Tanning, 2012 Hilltop Drive in Redding. Seating is limited to 145 at the Redding performance, so Swanenberg advis- es those wishing to attend the March 12 performance to buy advance tickets early.
