Local students volunteer in the community REDDING — More than 100 students participated in community service on strike teams at Simpson University in Redding during the fall 2013 semester. Students helped with 44 projects, including cleanup, construction, moving and maintenance, at many different locations. Cameron Greilich of Cottonwood, a psychology major, and Tucker Hoffman of Corning, an accounting major, were among the volunteers. Strike teams began during the 2012-13 school year after the university's ninth annual Day of Service, where students served at more than 10 locations in the area. With a heart for serving the local community, the university created an initiative to continue service year-round. Since September 2012, 74 projects have been completed. Hannah Dewater, one of the strike team assistants, served at 21 locations this semester. "My experience with the strike teams has challenged me to grow in the areas of service, leadership, and community awareness," she said. "We are able to come alongside people in their moments of panic, chaos and hurt, and provide loving help." Simpson University, founded in 1921, has an undergraduate enrollment of more than 750 students and offers degrees in 27 majors. Red Bluff grad places in design contest Red Bluff Union High School graduate Logan Olson and his team of product designers took second place in the University of Oregon's Colligan User Interface Design Challenge. The contest is an interdisciplinary competition that was designed to challenge students to create their vision for a new mobile interface application under the theme "Making Mobile Meaningful," according to the university's website. Throughout the course of this threemonth challenge, 16 student teams from across campus came together to create their vision for a new mobile interface application. The challenge prize money totaled $15,000. Four groups of University of Oregon students were selected by a panel of judges to participate in the "Duck Tank," the final concept presentations and awards on Jan. 16. Two of the four groups consisted of Product Design students in their senior year. Olson is a 2010 graduate of Red Bluff Union High School and was inspired to attend University of Oregon by a teacher at Berrendos Middle School. Olson's group, which included Claire Sakaguchi and Sara Birns, created Iris — an interface system that includes a vitals scanner worn on the head and a tablet that displays the information. This device would be best suited for doctors in countries where they do not speak the prominent language to help understand and treat the patient more sufficiently. The concept behind the system lies in simplicity, speed and visual communication. This interface serves as a visual language to help with the dialogue and interaction between the patient and the doctor. The conversation between doctor and patient is stored on the tablet and can be recovered and translated at a later time if needed or the entire conversation can be audible in real time, projected from the tablet. The combination of written language, oral translation and written translation ensures for correct understanding and communication between doctor and patient. Lastly, the interface provides a world map on the tablet that allows doctors to search a disease and a location, allowing for epidemiology related research. Doctors can track with diseases or incidents are prevalent in their area, which will help with their own diagnoses and treatment plans.
