Friday, January 24, 2014 – Daily News US developing plans to train Iraqis in Jordan WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials are developing plans to use a small number of U.S. special operations forces in Jordan to train Iraqi troops as part of a broader effort to help Iraq fight the growing alQaida threat within its borders. There has been no official request from Iraq yet for the training, but U.S. military leaders and Iraqi officials have been discussing how it would be done, said a senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity. A formal request from Baghdad will likely follow, once the details are worked out. Separately, legislative aides said Thursday that Congress cleared the way for the United States to provide Iraq with new military equipment to aid its battle against al-Qaida. Last week the Pentagon announced that it would soon deliver another installment of small arms and ammunition to the Iraqis, who have been battling militants over the control of Fallujah and Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar. The shipment was expected to include tank ammunition and Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, and the relevant congressional committees have approved that sale. Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and others had been blocking the longterm transfer of Apache helicopters to Iraq. The concerns centered on the Iraqi government potentially using them for internal crackdowns instead of national defense, and senators repeatedly had pressed the State Department for answers. The aides said Thursday the helicopter sale could clear soon. They demanded anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Over the past year, as violence has escalated in Baghdad and in Sunni-dominated areas, Iraqi officials have pleaded with Washington to help them fight al-Qaida with weapons and improved intelligence systems — including, potentially, sending U.S. special military forces and CIA advisers to help train and assist counterterror troops. The missiles are expected to be sent soon while delivery of new Apaches will take up to three years. The U.S. plans to lend some of the helicopters to the Iraqis in six months to nine months. And who used it the least, or not at all? The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights group, did some digging and found that President Barack Obama has used ''gay'' 272 times since taking office in 2009, far more than any of his recent predecessors: Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Only Clinton comes closest to Obama, having used ''gay'' 216 times during his two terms, says a new report from the advocacy group. Of his total, Clinton used the word 46 times regarding gays in the military and 80 times when discussing Matthew Shepard or hate-crime legislation. Shepard was a gay University of Wyoming student who was beaten to death in 1998. His killing raised awareness about antigay violence and spurred efforts to enact hate-crimes laws in the U.S. Neither George H.W. Bush nor Reagan used ''gay'' in any of their presidential remarks. George W. Bush used it twice in a public speech or remark, including one in which he disavowed marriage equality. He issued no proclamations on the subject. Obama also has used ''lesbian,'' ''gay,'' ''bisexual'' or ''transgender'' a total of 421 times, the report found, a linguistic feat that the Human Rights Campaign says has played a big part in the American public's acceptance of LGBT people and marriage equality because of a president's power to influence public opinion. The Subway sandwich chain will spend $41 million over three years to encourage them to eat more food that doesn't come from a box, the first lady announced Thursday at one of the Connecticutbased company's restaurants just north of the White House. Subway will also offer a kids' menu that mirrors federal standards for school lunches, including offering apples on the side and low-fat or nonfat plain milk or water as a default beverage. Speaking as a parent, Mrs. Obama said Subway's commitment will help moms and dads choose healthy food for their kids. Its kids' menu will help eliminate the worry some parents feel about the choices they have to make when eating out, she said. ''Every single item on the kids' menu meets the highest nutrition standards,'' the first lady said before she went to the counter and ordered a turkey on whole wheat bread with spinach, peppers, and oil and vinegar dressing. She paid the $4.40 tab with a $20 bill and scarfed down her lunch while chatting with a group of local elementary school students who had been invited for the announcement. Some of Subway's famous celebrity endorsers also were present, including Olympians Nastia Lukin, who prepared Mrs. Obama's sandwich, and Michael Phelps, along with New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck and Jared Fogle. Fogle gained fame in a series of TV commercials years ago in which he described losing 245 pounds while eating a steady diet of Subway sandwiches, plus walking. Subway's commitment is ''a natural extension of what we do,'' Tony Pace, Subway's chief marketing officer, said in a telephone interview. The chain offers a line of lean-meat and vegetable sandwiches that have been certified by the American Heart Association, as well as a trio of breakfast sandwiches with fewer than 200 calories apiece. Pace said people are becoming more aware of the importance of eating healthier. Subway's announcement follows a summit on food marketing to kids that Mrs. Obama held at the White House last fall. At the time, she urged food and beverage makers, media and entertainment companies, and others to do more to promote healthier foods to children. A month after the September gathering, Mrs. Obama announced that the nonprofit organization that produces TV's ''Sesame Street'' had agreed to let the produce industry use Elmo, Big Bird and its other furry characters free of charge in its kid-focused advertising. Sam Kass, a White House chef and executive director of the first lady's campaign against childhood obesity, told The Associated Press that Subway was ''raising the bar for what a responsible, quick-service restaurant can do to help support the health of the nation.'' Subway will work with the Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit organization that works with the private sector to help advance the goals of ''Let's Move,'' the childhood obesity initiative Mrs. Obama launched in 2010, a year after becoming first lady.
