Friday, January 24, 2014 – Daily News 3A Community people&events Red Bluff FFA participates in speaking contest By CLAIRE LESTER Each January, several students from the local Red Bluff FFA chapter compete in the local speaking contest. Two of the competitions students can choose to participate in include the creed speaking contest for greenhands and the prepared speaking contest, which is open to all FFA members. Greenhands are high school freshmen who are members of the FFA organization. Greenhands who participate in the creed speaking contest must memorize all five paragraphs of the FFA creed. The FFA creed expresses the fundamental belief that agriculturists across America can and will overcome the challenges of farm life through hard work and perseverance. The 2014 creed speakers competed on January 14th, and each participant recited the entire creed in front of a panel of judges. Red Bluff FFA had several brave participants this year. The top sectional qualifiers were Gabe Fregoso, Allyson Drury, and Rhylee Garrison. Participants for this year were Omi Renfroe, Keagan Richards, and Miranda Iverson. In addition, the prepared speaking contest was held on Jan. 16. Members of the Ag leadership class worked for several months to research, write, and memorize a six- to eightminute-long speech regarding a relevant agricultural issue. Some topics for this year were mad cow disease, the California water crisis, and humane slaughtering practices. After reciting their speeches, the participants were asked two questions regarding their topic. Each participant is scored out of one thousand points, with 250 points being awarded to structure and accuracy of the speech, 450 are awarded Spaghetti dinner Red Bluff Emblem club will be serving a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Red Bluff Elks Lodge, 350 Gilmore Road, as a benefit for the Tehama County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Emblem club is a long-time supporter of the non-profit local group. For decades the society has bridged the gap between needs of local people and assistance from public agencies and private insurance. In the 2012/2013 year it expended more for aid than it received in memorials and donations. This year's theme child is Ali BenLanes. If he is able to attend, he will be introduced at the dinner. He was born July 1, 2011, with eyes that were completely white. Physicians soon found that he had complications of the heart, glaucoma and blindness. He has also had surgery for an inguinal hernia. The society has helped with his frequent trips to the University of California-Davis Medical Center. Although his heart condition has improved, he is being treated to promote the growth of his eye sockets and he has little eyesight.
