CUMBERLAND Endowment Established for 4-H Volunteer County Facilities, Libraries Smoke Free Jan. 1 An endowment has been established in honor of one of Cumberland County's longest-serving 4-H volunteers to fund training for 4-H volunteer leaders. The Eleanore Davis Getz 4-H Volunteer Training and Development Endowment was established through the N.C. Agricultural Foundation at N.C. State University by her children, Jeff Getz and Deborah Sims. The fund is required to have $15,000 in five years to retain endowment status. Getz has been involved with Cumberland County's 4-H program since 1976. Getz is a member of the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame and North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame. She has served as a club leader, district president and has held many statewide 4-H offices. Getz also founded the 4-H Master Volunteer ACE (Achieving Continuing Education) Program. "As I've said many times before, 4-H is not something I volunteered for, it is a way of life," Getz said. Fifteen Cumberland County Government facilities including all public libraries will become smoke-free campuses effective Jan. 1. The ordinance banning smoking on the selected county properties, including the parking lots and inside vehicles, was adopted by the Board of Commissioners in May. Signs informing the public and county employees of the upcoming smoke-free grounds policy were put up in July. The smoke-free campuses include the Department of Public Health, Department of Social Services, and all library branches. Smoking has been prohibited in all county buildings and vehicles, and within 25 feet of all entrances to buildings since 1993. Other smoke-free campuses include: • E. Newton Smith Center/Board of Elections, 227 Fountainhead Lane • Historic Courthouse, 130 Gillespie St. • Hope Mills WIC office, 2622 Hope Mills Road • Spring Lake Family Resource Center, 103 Laketree Blvd., Spring Lake • County Facility at 109 Bradford Ave., which houses the Child Support Department. County Offices Closed New Year's Day Cumberland County Government offices will be closed Jan. 1 for the New Year's Day holiday. This closing includes all Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center locations, the Animal Control Shelter and all Solid Waste Management container sites and recycling centers.
