GIRLS HOOPS Shasta 49 Red Bluff 40 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Spartans played one of their best single quarters of the season, Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to hold up in a 49-40 loss to visiting Shasta. Red Bluff opened the game with an 18-11 first quarter as Roxy Luppino sanchwiched a pair of 3-pointers around 10 Cori Schatz points and Alana Hinkston closed out the period with a bucket. From there Red Bluff’s offense started to putter as the Spartans would- n’t reach double-digits in a quarter for the rest of the game. Still, Red Bluff was able to maintain its shaky lead until four minutes left in the game when Shasta’s Megan Bielecki collected an offensive rebound and put back an easy basket to give the Wolves a 37-36 lead, their first since the first quarter. Seconds later Corinne Smith hit a jumper to extend the Wolves lead to 39-36 and from there Shasta made enough free throws to keep a Spartans comeback attempt from happening. Allie Maxwell led Shasta with 12 points and Andrea Davis chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Schatz, who battled foul trouble for most of the second half, finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Hinkston had nine points and nine rebounds. It was the second time this season the Lady Spartans (4-9) let a game slip away against Shasta (9-5). Turnovers against the Wolves press doomed Red Bluff at the Holiday Classic on Dec. 17. On Tuesday, Shasta didn’t press at all, but still the Lady Spartans found ways to turn the ball over during the final three periods. Eventually they gave up their lead as well.
