Honoring the Greatest Generation by KAREN POPPELE In May 2005, six small planes with 12 World War II veterans as passengers traveled from Springfield, Ohio, to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., marking the inaugural Honor Flight Tour. It was the first of many Honor Flights to come, with volunteers working to pilot and accompany thousands of veterans to visit the memorial dedicated to them almost 60 years after their contributions and experiences during the war. In honor of these veterans of the "Greatest Generation," Community Concerts, an all-volunteer, nonprofit arts organization, will present the film documentary, Honor Flight as part of its series on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Crown Arena in Photo Credit: Visual Image Photography Fayetteville. Admission is free to A World War II veteran looks over thousands World War II veterans and their of fallen soldiers' grave stones at Arlington families; general admission for all National Cemetery. others is $10. "This is something very different and special for us," said Michael Fleishman, Community Concerts attractions director. "We've never had anything quite like this. Honor Flight is a very moving and emotional film experience, and we plan to dress it up." According to the movie's website, www.honorflightthemovie.com, "Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. For the veterans, who are in their late 80s and early 90s, it's often the first time they've been thanked and the last trip of their lives. The 24hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved." The Honor Flight Network (www.honorflight.org), "a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices," transports veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials, with priority given to World War II survivors and other veterans who may be terminally ill. Since, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs, an estimated 640 World War II veterans die each day, time to thank and honor these brave heroes runs short. To date, the organization, which consists of 117 hubs nationwide, has flown over 100,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. In addition to the film, Fleishman noted that music and speakers will also contribute to the event. "It's a very emotional film experience about what it is to be an American. This is our salute to the military and the veterans of World War II and the 'Greatest Generation.' Dignitaries and speakers will be in attendance, and a lot of kids in the school system will be playing for us. Given the importance of Fayetteville as a military community, we will have the director, Dan Hayes, and/or the producer, Clay Broga, of 'Honor Flight' here." The event is part of Community Concerts' 78th season. Fayetteville's oldest arts organization is dedicated to bringing "the finest in top-notch entertainment to Fayetteville."
