CSAC Senior Legislative Representative Elizabeth Howard-Espinosa presented a 2013 Challenge Award to Chairman Dennis Garton and Sheriff Dave Hencratt at the Board of Supervisors meeting. Counties across California submitted around 200 innovative programs for consideration for the Challenge Award. Out of those 12 were chosen, Howard-Espinosa said. "Tehama County is again showing itself to be a local government leader," she said. The Sheriff's Department opened the shop in July 2012 as an alternative to incarceration that could also provide marketable work force skills. The shop is run by a deputy with 15 years of experience as a licensed journeyman mechanic and an assistant. At any given time up to nine work release inmates provide up to 200 hours of labor per week servicing county vehicles by fixing transmissions, changing oil, rotating tires and detailing patrol cars. A startup cost of The musical chairs of government buildings in Red Bluff led the Tehama County Board of Supervisors Tuesday to discuss possible temporary locations for the Probation Department's Day Reporting Center. The center is at Wetter Hall, but demolition of that building is scheduled for sometime next year by the California Administrative Office of the Courts, which will relocate the Tehama District Courts to that location. Chief Administrator Bill Goodwin said that work is scheduled to begin in December 2014, although he has seen some correspondence suggesting it could be moved up to June 2014. The county is one of several in the North State vying for grant funding from the state as part of California's prison realignment plan. The county is asking for $20 million to expand its jail and build a permanent location for the Day Reporting Center. However even if that grant comes through, it would be at least five years before that facility became a reality. The new law enforcement facility would be built at the site of the See CENTER, page 9A Daily News photo by Andre Byik William Metteer Elementary School students commemorate veterans with a performance of "God Bless America" on Friday at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center. By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer In a commemoration event for dozens of veterans, kindergartners enthusiastically waved American flags, others performed patriotic songs such as "God Bless America," and a school's student body prepared care packages for servicemen and women in the field. It was William Metteer Elementary School's annual Veterans Day commemoration event at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center, where students Friday saluted those who served in the military and Fire safety campaign today The Red Cross is hosting a Fire Stoppers outreach event for Red Bluff today. The Red Cross Fire Stoppers effort is designed to help residents learn more about home fire prevention and to draw attendance to a future seminar where residents will learn how to use a fire extinguisher and install and check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These devices will also be given away at the free seminar. About 18 volunteers will visit as many as 2,000 residents in Red Bluff late Saturday morning and early afternoon with literature and infor- mation on the upcoming seminar being held Saturday, Nov. 16. The Red Cross worked with the Red Bluff Fire Department to help identify neighborhoods with frequent house fires. As we approach winter and the holidays, people will burn in fireplaces, set up holiday lighting and even do more cooking in their homes. These activities can increase the risk of home fires. The Fire Stoppers program is being funded by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, which made a $200,000 grant this year for Red Cross chapters throughout our service area to host these outreach efforts. This year, it was World War II, and at least three veterans of that war were in attendance. They received standing ovations. "There's not going to be very many World War II vets left in about a decade," said Christopher Boles, a Vietnam War veteran who is a member of the event's committee, during a presentation. He added that the Metteer School's tribute is not common among other schools, and that when he was asked to help he said, "I'm in." "But I have to tell you that I stand on the shoulders of giants," said Boles, who shot film in the Vietnam War. "There's people that support me, and you as veterans that have served before me I want to say thank you very much. Because without your service and sacrifice we would not be able to do this here today." Boles during his presentation evoked memories of World War II by rattling off the names of historical events, places and things. During her visit Janna Hoehn took a random etching of Gregory John Crossman, who was listed as Missing In Action. She set about to find his family intent on sending them the etching, if they were unable to visit the wall and take their own. Though she never found the family, the search led her to the Call for Photos project of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which endeavors to obtain a photo for each name listed on the wall.
