Student injured at Lassen View exit By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer A Lassen View Elementary School fifth-grader and her father were flown to Enloe Medical Cen- ter with major injuries after being involved in a three-car traffic colli- sion as they were leaving the school around 3:20 p.m., Thursday. The student was ejected from the rear passenger window of a Nissan Frontier as it spun after being hit by a Subaru compact car, said Sgt. Stephanie Drake of the Red Bluff office of California Highway Patrol. The truck was stopped at a stop sign at the entrance of the school parking lot, waiting to make a left turn onto Highway 99E. The Subaru, driven by an elderly man whose name was not released, was northbound on the highway. The driver was driving well above the speed limit and came around the curve too fast, Drake said. He was not aware that he had gone into the right turn lane and ran into the front left side of the Nissan and another car, also at the stop sign. The other car, a Ford Explorer, was waiting to make a right turn. Judge Stephen Rein- hardt of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a request that he recuse himself from the Propo- sition 8 case because he is married to Ramona Ripston, who plans to retire in February as head of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Southern California office. The ACLU is an out- spoken opponent of Proposition 8. Supporters of the gay marriage ban argued in court papers Wednesday that the judge appointed by President Carter would have trouble remaining impartial because of his wife’s link to the ACLU. They noted Reinhardt had recused himself in the past when the ACLU was involved in cases before him, and asked him to step down from the three-judge panel considering their appeal of a lower court deci- sion striking down the gay marriage ban. ‘‘I will be able to rule impartially on this appeal, and I will do so,’’ Reinhardt said in his brief order. Hours later, Andrew Pugno, a lawyer for the organization Protect- Marriage.com that’s pursuing the appeal, said it accepted Rein- hardt’s decision and will drop the recusal attempt. ‘‘Our legal team is focused on the merits of our constitutional defense of Proposition 8,’’ Pugno said. ‘‘With binding Supreme Court precedent and the will of a strong majority of Americans on our side, we are confident that Proposition 8 and the institution of marriage will ultimately prevail.’’ Reinhardt, who most 7 5 8 5 5 1 6 9 0 0 1 9 famously voted with the majority in ruling the Pledge of Allegiance’s ‘‘under god’’ clause vio- lated the Constitution, and Judges N. Passengers in the Explorer, the driver’s two nieces who are students at Lassen View, were released from the scene and picked up by other relatives. A passenger in the Subaru, the wife of the driver, was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Com- munity Hospital with moderate injuries to the neck area, Drake said. Brown invited Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s finance director, Ana Matosantos, and Legisla- tive Analyst Mac Taylor to deliver presentations at the forum Wednesday, spokesman Sterling Clif- ford said. The meeting at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium will come just two days after Schwarzenegger calls lawmakers back to deal with the $6 billion deficit in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. For my youngest boys it is Christmas and they can’t imagine the holiday with- out the boutique.” Kremer remembers well handwriting the invi- tations the first year of the boutique and then, because she worried no one would come, calling everyone she knew to invite them. The event started after she and her friends took a tole painting class from Jeannie Serveau in Red Bluff and the rest is histo- ry. The boutique has grown over the years both in the number of people attending and the vendors, gradually becoming like family with so many returning each year hav- ing made it a tradition for their families, Kremer said.
