8B – Daily News – Friday, December 3, 2010 NatGeo puts game wardens in the spotlight Department of Fish and Game (DFG) wardens are working with the National Geographic Channel to show- case wildlife crime fighting in California. “Wild Justice” debuted nationally with two episodes on Sunday, Nov. 28. More than 3 million people tuned in to watch one or both of the episodes. The show has now moved to a regular time slot of Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. Each week, camera crews accompany California game wardens on patrol working everything from poaching investigations involving deer, wild pigs and abalone to illegal drug use/possession, stolen vehicles and illegal marijuana cultivation. The vast majority of Cali- fornia hunters and anglers are engaged in lawful, ethical out- door recreation. Legitimate hunters and anglers have con- tributed to the majority of the fish and wildlife conservation efforts in California for more than 100 years. Although the show focuses on the very small percentage that break the law, the series also recognizes hunters and anglers who prac- tice responsible conservation of the fish and wildlife popula- tions — and their habitats — that we enjoy today. The producers of the show, Original Productions, also pro- duce the hit series “Deadliest Catch,” “Ice Road Truckers” and “Axemen,” among others. Their intensive style of pro- duction puts the viewer in the middle of the action as war- dens conduct investigations of every sort. They even attached cameras to the collars of war- den K9s to get a viewpoint unlike any other. For more information, see the National Geographic Channel’s “Wild Justice” web- site, www.natgeotv.com/wild- justice. Older driver awareness week Senior drivers are the fastest growing segment of the popula- tion and, other than teenagers, the most likely to be killed while behind the wheel. In support of next week’s Older Driver Safety Awareness Week Dec. 6-10, AAA Northern California is offering seniors and their families tools to begin the difficult conversation about the challenges of driving and aging. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one in five people will be at least 65 years old by the year 2030. That same year, near- ly 10 million people will be 85 years of age or older. An esti- mated 90 percent of both these groups will be licensed to drive. When a crash does occur, age- related frailties make a senior more likely to be injured or killed. This helps to explain why seniors have the highest crash death rate per mile of any group except teenagers, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Conversations about safe dri- ving can evoke strong emotional reactions from some older dri- vers, particularly concerns about personal independence and man- aging day-to-day activities. AAA encourages seniors and their families to approach these sensitive conversations as oppor- tunities for constructive commu- nication and problem solving. AAA has many resources and tools for older drivers and their families, including: • AAA Roadside Review is a computer-based tool designed to privately assess a driver’s func- tional abilities related to safe dri- ving behavior. • CarFit and AAA’s Smart Features for Mature Drivers evaluate and enhance seniors’ comfort and safety in their car while driving. • Online Mature Driver Course can help reduce an older driver’s risk of traffic violations and collisions and qualify seniors for insurance discounts. • DriveSharp is an online course clinically proven to help drivers cut their risk of collision. More information on senior driver safety and mobility as well as details on how to access these programs is avail- able at www.aaa.com/senior- drivers.
