Wednesday, November 6, 2013 – Daily News 3A Community people&events Winter Soup Event at farmers market The Frontier Village Farmers Market will host a special winter soup event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 645 Antelope Blvd. in Red Bluff. Come share a warm bowl of soup while shopping at Frontier Village Farmers Market. For $3 you can get a tasting kit and a one time pass through to sample the 8-10 soups and chili being offered. If you already know your favorite, you can purchase an 8 oz bowl for $6. A handmade Randy Holbrook pottery bowl, a tasting kit and an 8 oz choice of your favorite soup will be available for $20. Coffee and hot cider will be available to purchase as well as baked goods. All proceeds are to help support the market, sponsored by Slow Food Shasta Cascade, 501(c)3 NonProfit. Whiskeytown free for Veterans Day weekend The National Park Service will honor all military veterans with free entrance to all 401 national parks, including Lassen Volcanic National Park and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, for everyone during the Veterans Day weekend — Nov. 9-11. "I invite everyone to come to Whiskeytown to commemorate Veterans Day to enjoy the beauty and majesty of the land our veterans fought to protect," said Superintendent Jim Milestone. In addition, Western National Parks Association is providing a special 15% off sale on all items, including tee shirts, souvenirs and books, at the park store located inside the Whiskeytown Visitor Center. The National Park Service also provides active duty members of the military and their dependents with an annual national park pass, an $80 value, at no charge. Permanently disabled veterans can receive a free lifetime pass to all parks. The passes can be acquired at any national park that charges an entrance fee. Information about all national park passes is available at nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm. Cali-Avocado Steak Salad Cali-Avocado Steak Salad required just eight ingredients to wow the judges at the 2013 NBCO. 1 boneless beef top sirloin steak, cut 1 inch thick (about 1/2 pound) 6 teaspoons olive oil, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon black pepper, divided 1 large navel orange 1 large Fresh California Avocado 2 loaves naan bread, (about 3 ounces each). Rub both sides of beef steak with 1 teaspoon olive oil; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. 2. Cut bottom and top off orange. Remove remaining skin from orange; cut into segments; reserve. Cut avocado in half; remove pit, but do not peel. Squeeze juice from two cut ends of orange over cut sides of avocado, then brush with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Sprinkle with remaining salt. 3. Add orange segments to salad. Remove skin from grilled avocado. Cut avocado into slices; add to salad and toss gently. Carve steak into thin slices; place on top of salad. Selected books will be on sale for as little as 10 cents and all proceeds will be circulated back to the library. Each year the Friends have two sales. In addition to dues and donations, proceeds from the book sales are used to purchase new books and equipment for the library. This year the Friends purchased audio books totaling $1,500, all of which are now available to check out at the Corning Library. This year's additions to the library include new computers for patron use and book club bags that have enough books to make your own book club. You can also join the library's book club, which meets once a month.
