Congratulations to Claudia Newman
Beginning Teacher of the Month for Cumberland County Schools
Claudia Newman is current- ly in her second year as a bi- ology teacher at Massey Hill Classical High School. During her fi rst year as a teacher, Ms. Newman not only juggled the requirements of the job, but she also parented three children while her husband was deployed. In addition she became a United States citizen. As she begins her sec- ond year, she is more enthusi- astic than ever about her teaching and assisting her students to become budding scientists. She teaches using hands-on experi- ences with the Smart Board, labs, and other available technol- ogy. She always focuses on the requirements of the NC Standard Course of Study and 91% of her students achieved profi ciency in state testing. She helps train students for Science Olympiad, supervises fund raisers for Science Olympiad, and contributes her expertise to our staff. Three of Ms. Newman’s biology stu- dents placed in the regional science fair (UNC Pembroke) in February, 2010, and earned the honor of competing at the state level. Most of all, Ms. Newman is always smiling and willing to assist her colleagues. She greets every day and every obstacle with positive, productive energy making Massey Hill Classical a better place for teachers and students.
