Methodist’s All Choir Concert Spotlights Students Talents During Annual Concert by KIMBERLY SMALLS The best and brightest of Methodist University’s Music Department will be featured in the All Choirs Fall Concert on Friday, Nov. 19. The All Choirs Fall Concert is part of the Friends of Music Friday Concert Series. The series was named after the Friends of Music, which is an organization that sponsors all the recitals held at Methodist University. The Friends of Music grew out of a need to provide a base of community and alumni support for the Department of Music at Methodist University. Over the last few years the Friends of Music has brought a wide variety of faculty-student concerts, hosted concert receptions, established an endowed music scholarship and presented professional guest artist concerts and master classes. The All Choirs Fall Concert was formerly the Holiday Concert which was held in December. However, this year the concert was renamed and moved to November. This year’s concert features performances by the Methodisut University Chorale, Methodist University Chamber Singers, the women’s chorus known as the Trembletones and the male chorus known as the Noblemen. The concert is being peformed under the direction of Michael Martin, director of Choral Activities and Music Education at Methodist University. Elizabeth Winstead will direct the women’s chorus. Winstead is an adjunct professor of voice at Methodist University. Sixty students will participate in this year’s concert, which Martin says is the largest group he’s seen in his four years with the program. The concert will feature a wide variety of music including holiday songs, spirituals, vocal jazz and songs from the renaissance period. “Quite a diverse presentation [of music]” Martin says. “There will be something for everyone.” Students in the music program have been preparing all semester for this concert. For them, Martin says the concert is like a “fi nal exam.” “[The concert] is a formalized way to perform the songs they learned all semester,” he explained. The All Choirs Concert will be held Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Reeves Auditorium on the Methodist University campus. The event is free to the public. For more information call 910- 630-7100.
